French troops deploy in last of Mali rebel strongholds

DOUENTZA, Mali/PARIS | Wed Jan 30, 2013 6:21pm EST

DOUENTZA, Mali/PARIS (Reuters) - French troops seized the airport in Mali's northern town of Kidal, the last urban stronghold held by Islamist insurgents, as they moved to wrap up the first phase of a military operation to wrest northern Mali from rebel hands.

France has deployed some 4,500 troops in a three-week ground and air offensive to break the Islamist rebels' 10-month grip on major northern towns. The mission is aimed at heading off the risk of Mali being used as a springboard for jihadist attacks in the wider region or Europe.

The French military plans to gradually hand over to a larger African force, tasked with rooting out insurgents in their mountain redoubts near Algeria's border.

Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said French forces using planes and helicopters defied a sandstorm late on Tuesday to capture the airport but had been prevented by the bad weather from entering the town itself.

"The terrorist forces are pulling back to the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains which are difficult to access," Le Drian told a news conference. "There is support from Chadian and Nigerian troops coming from the south."

The deployment of French troops to remote Kidal puts them in direct contact with pro-autonomy Tuareg MNLA rebels, whose rebellion last year was hijacked by the Islamist radicals. Le Drian said France had established good relations with local Tuareg chieftains before sending in troops.

MNLA leaders say they are ready to fight al Qaeda but many Malians, including the powerful military top brass in the capital Bamako, blame them for the division of the country. They view Paris' liaisons with the Tuaregs with suspicion.

French and Malian troops retook the major Saharan trading towns of Gao and Timbuktu at the weekend.

There were fears that many thousands of priceless ancient manuscripts held in Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, might have been lost during the rebel occupation, but experts said the bulk of the texts were safe.

The United States and European governments strongly support the Mali intervention and are providing logistical and surveillance backing but do not intend to send combat troops.

The MNLA rebels, who want greater autonomy for the desert north, said they had moved fighters into Kidal after Islamists left the town earlier this week.

"For the moment, there is a coordination with the French troops," said Moussa Ag Assarid, the MNLA spokesman in Paris.

A spokesman for the Malian army said its soldiers were securing Gao and Timbuktu and were not heading to Kidal.

The MNLA took up arms against the Bamako government a year ago, seeking to carve out a new independent desert state.

After initially fighting alongside the Islamists, by June they had been forced out by their better armed and financed former allies, who include al Qaeda North Africa's wing, AQIM, a splinter wing called MUJWA and Ansar Dine, a Malian group.

RISK OF ATTACKS, KIDNAPPINGS

As the French wind up the first phase of their offensive, doubts remain about just how quickly the U.N.-backed African intervention force can be fully deployed in Mali to hunt down the retreating al Qaeda-allied insurgents. Known as AFISMA, the force is now expected to exceed 8,000 troops.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France's military operation, codenamed Serval (Wildcat), was planned as a lightning mission lasting a few weeks.

"Liberating Gao and Timbuktu very quickly was part of the plan. Now it's up to the African countries to take over," he told the Le Parisien daily. "We decided to put in the means and the necessary number of soldiers to strike hard. But the French contingent will not stay like this. We will leave very quickly."

One French soldier has been killed in the mission, and Fabius warned that things could now get more difficult, as the offensive seeks to flush out insurgents with experience of fighting in the desert from their wilderness hideouts.

"We have to be careful. We are entering a complicated phase where the risks of attacks or kidnappings are extremely high. French interests are threatened throughout the entire Sahel."

An attack on the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria earlier this month by Islamist fighters opposing the French intervention in Mali led to the deaths of dozens of foreign hostages and raised fears of similar reprisal strikes across North and West Africa.

NEED FOR RECONCILIATION

The French operation has destroyed the Islamists' training camps and logistics bases but analysts say a long term solution for Mali hinges on finding a political settlement between the northern communities and the southern capital Bamako.

Interim President Dioncounda Traore said on Tuesday his government would aim to hold national elections on July 31. Paris is pushing strongly for Traore's government to hold talks with the MNLA, which has dropped its claims for independence.

"The Malian authorities must begin without delay talks with the legitimate representatives of the northern population and non-terrorist armed groups that recognize Mali's integrity," French Foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot said.

After months of being kept on the political sidelines, the MNLA said they were in contact with West African mediators who are trying to forge a national settlement to reunite Mali.

"We reiterate that we are ready to talk with Bamako and to find a political solution. We want self-determination, but all that will be up to negotiations which will determine at what level both parties can go," Ag Assarid said.

There have been cases in Gao and Timbuktu and other recaptured towns of reprisal attacks and looting of shops and residences belonging to Malian Tuaregs and Arabs suspected of sympathizing with the MNLA and the Islamist rebels.

Pentax expands ruggedized series with Optio WG-3, Target-exclusive WG-10

Pentax expands ruggedized series with Optio WG3, Targetexclusive WG10

Think it might be time for a new ruggedized Pentax? It looks like the company agrees -- two new models are making their debut this week at CP+. The first is actually a rebranded WG-1, now called the WG-10, which will be available exclusively at Target stores and the website beginning in April. It's identical to the WG-1, save for the obligatory red finish and a $180 price tag. The second model is more of an original number -- it's an update to last year's WG-2. The new compact, dubbed the WG-3, maintains the unique design of the other two Optios, including a nifty LED ring around the lens for lighting macro shots.

There's a 16-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD, a 4x lens with an f/2 wide-angle maximum aperture, along with options for 1080/30p and 720/60p video capture. It's waterproof to 14 meters (46 feet), shockproof to 2 meters (6.5 feet) and freeze-proof to -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). The basic version will run you $300, while a tricked-out $350 model adds GPS and Qi wireless charging, along with a secondary LCD that displays the current time, barometric pressure, a compass, altitude and underwater depth. Snag a peek in the gallery below.

PENTAX Introduces 15th Generation Ruggedized Camera -the WG-3 GPS and WG-3

Performance meets photographic demands with fast F2.0 lens, in-camera shake reduction, and increased waterproof, crushproof and shockproof ratings

Denver, CO (January 29, 2013)- Leveraging its long-standing and comprehensive expertise in the waterproof category, PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION (PENTAX) has introduced the 15th generation in its adventureproof line-up of point and shoot cameras, the WG-3. Boasting a diverse set of new features and improved specifications, the WG-3 is the ideal companion to capture life's planned and unplanned adventures.

The WG-3 boasts a rich feature-set that has been optimized to meet the rigorous and demanding needs of the adventurous photo enthusiast, whose travels and exploits can take them into a variety of scenarios too challenging for the traditional point-and-shoot. Its newly designed, large-aperture, 4x optical zoom lens (with the maximum aperture of F2.0 at wide-angle end), high-sensitivity, back-illuminated 16 megapixel CMOS image sensor, and sensor-shift Shake Reduction system ensure sharp, high-quality, low-noise images.

The rugged features of the WG-3 include an improved waterproof depth rating to 45 feet, while the WG-3 GPS offers enhanced GPS functionality for geo-tagging images that can be mapped back to your journey and a dedicated second display showing compass direction, elevation or depth below water. Additionally, the WG-3's category defining Digital Microscope mode and six LED lights surrounding the lens barrel enable focusing as close as one centimeter from the subject producing bright, shadow-free macro images.

For the unplanned adventure, the WG-3 offers a worry-free shooting experience with an increasingly ruggedized body that is shockproof from drops of up to 6.6 feet, coldproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and crushproof, withstanding up to 220 foot pounds of force. The WG-3's rugged design is enhanced by its folded optical zoom lens that reduces its vulnerability to moisture and dust while ensuring a compact and pocketable size without the protrusion of a lens barrel. Finally, the sturdy construction and sharp design, unique to the WG-3, features a texturized grip for a controlled ergonomic grasp and colorful grip accents to further enrich its rugged styling.

"The WG-3 GPS truly leverages our experience in this category," said John Carlson, Sr. Marketing Manager, PENTAX. "New features like the easy-to-read second LCD, dedicated video record button, double-locking battery door and wireless charging capabilities show PENTAX's dedication to improving our offering in this category."

To enhance creative expression during shooting PENTAX offers an optional lens adapter with wide-angle coverage to 20mm, and the SportMount Chest Harness which allows for the hands free capture of adventures and features a quick and easy mechanism to review your images and footage without having to remove the camera from its mount.

Pricing and Availability

Priced at $349.95 the new WG-3 GPS is available in a choice of purple or green. The WG-3 is available in black or orange for a price of $299.95. PENTAX Announces 14th Generation Adventure Proof WG-10, Expanding Image Capturing Possibilities Beyond the Traditional Point and Shoot Camera

WG-10 offers compact pocketability with advanced features suitable for almost any environment

Denver, CO (January 29, 2013) - PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION (PENTAX) has today announced the availability of the compact and highly portable WG-10 adventureproof point and shoot camera, an ideal option for the on-the-go shooter who requires a capable yet sturdy image and video capturing device. Its durable assembly and robust feature-set makes the WG-10 the ideal companion camera for life's explorers; striking the perfect balance between a point and shoot and PENTAX's category defining adventure-ready features.

Waterproof to depths of 33 feet, the WG-10 can withstand the rough-and-tumble lifestyle of an active shooter. The WG-10 bridges the gap between the common point and shoot and life's more challenging photo opportunities that might require waterproofing or the ability to function in a very cold environment; like a trip to the waterpark or an impromptu snowball fight. The WG-10 offers a 14 megapixel backlit CMOS image sensor and a state-of-the-art imaging processing engine assuring rich and detailed imagery.

"The WG-10 is a compelling offering for the active family or dynamic shooter," said John Carlson, Sr. Marketing Manager, PENTAX. "With the WG-10 you no longer need to sit on the edge of the pool at the waterpark or flinch when your six-year-old grabs the camera to take a picture. It is durable enough to withstand the elements, yet still capture vibrant images worthy of framing or sharing."

Within its compact body, the WG-10 also features a 5X optical zoom lens with coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approx. 28mm wide angle to approx. 140mm medium telephoto in the 35mm format). This versatile zoom lens comes in handy for a wide variety of scenes and subjects, from wide-angle snapshots, to telephoto images. Additionally, the WG-10 features PENTAX's category defining LED Macro lights coupled and Digital Microscope mode enabling focusing as close as one centimeter from the subject producing shadow-free, evenly-lit images.

Pricing and Availability

The WG-10 will be available in mid-April in red for $179.95.

Senate confirms Kerry nomination for State Dept.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate overwhelmingly confirmed President Barack Obama's choice of five-term Sen. John Kerry to be secretary of state, with Republicans and Democrats praising him as the ideal successor to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The vote Tuesday was 94-3. One senator ? Kerry ? voted present and accepted congratulations from colleagues on the Senate floor. The roll call came just hours after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved the man who has led the panel for the past four years.

No date has been set for Kerry's swearing-in, though a welcoming ceremony is planned at the State Department on Monday.

Obama tapped Kerry, 69, the son of a diplomat, decorated Vietnam veteran and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, to succeed Clinton, who is stepping down after four years. The Massachusetts Democrat, who had pined for the job but was passed over in 2009, has served as Obama's unofficial envoy, smoothing fractious ties with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"Sen. Kerry will need no introduction to the world's political and military leaders and will begin Day One fully conversant not only with the intricacies of U.S. foreign policy, but able to act on a multitude of international stages," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who will succeed Kerry as committee chairman.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the panel's top Republican, called Kerry "a realist" who will deal with unrest in Egypt, civil war in Syria, the threat of al-Qaida-linked groups in Africa and Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Kerry, a forceful proponent of climate change legislation, also will have a say in whether the United States moves ahead on the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada, a divisive issue that has roiled environmentalists.

Obama had nominated Kerry after Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, removed her name from consideration following criticism from Republicans over her initial comments about the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Voting against Kerry were three Republicans ? Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of Texas. Absent from the vote were Sens. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and John Hoeven, R-N.D.

"Sen. Kerry has a long history of liberal positions that are not consistent with a majority of Texans," Cornyn said in a statement. The senator is up for re-election next year and could face a tea party challenge.

Kerry's smooth path to the nation's top diplomatic job stands in stark contrast to the harsher treatment for Obama's other national security nominees ? Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary and John Brennan to be CIA director.

Hagel, the former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska, faces strong opposition from some of his onetime GOP colleagues who question his support for reductions in the nuclear arsenal and cuts in defense spending. Lawmakers also have questioned whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel and strongly opposed to any outreach to Iran.

Democrats have rallied for Hagel, and he has the announced support of at least a dozen members in advance of his confirmation hearing on Thursday. Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi will support Hagel, a spokesman said Tuesday, making him the first Republican to signal he will vote for the nomination.

Six Republicans have said they would vote against him, with some opposing Obama's choice even before the president's announcement.

Brennan faces questions from the GOP about White House leaks of classified information and from Democrats about the administration's use of drones.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to block the nomination of both men until he gets more answers from the Obama administration about the assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Graham, who earlier this month signaled he would delay Brennan's pick, said in an interview Monday night with Fox News' "On the Record" the he would "absolutely" block Hagel unless Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testifies about the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton testified for more than five hours last Wednesday before the House and Senate, but that wasn't sufficient for Graham.

"Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view," he said. "She said they had a clear-eyed view of the threats. How could you have a clear-eyed of the threats in Benghazi when you didn't know about the ambassador's cable coming back from Libya?"

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters Tuesday that a hearing with Panetta on Libya is planned though the date is uncertain. Graham welcomed that news and said he would not thwart a committee vote on the nomination.

"Happy as a clam. News to me," said Graham, who met with Hagel for 20 minutes on Tuesday.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said Panetta had not responded yet to the request but that the department has been forthcoming with information. He insisted that the Hagel confirmation process move as quickly as possible.

Two former chairmen of the committee ? Democrat Sam Nunn of Georgia and Republican John Warner of Virginia ? plan to introduce Hagel, according to officials close to the confirmation process. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the committee has not formally made an announcement.

As a White House emissary, Kerry has tamped down diplomatic fires for Obama. He also has stepped ahead of the administration on a handful of crises. He joined Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., as an early proponent of a more aggressive policy toward Libya, pushing for using military forces to impose a "no-fly zone" over Libya as Moammar Gadhafi's forces killed rebels and other citizens. He was one of the early voices calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down as revolution roiled the nation two years ago.

During his tenure, Kerry has pushed for reducing the number of nuclear weapons, shepherding a U.S.-Russia treaty through the Senate in December 2010, and has cast climate change as a national security threat, joining forces with Republicans on legislation that faced too many obstacles to win congressional passage.

He has led delegations to Syria and met a few times with President Bashar Assad, now a pariah in U.S. eyes after months of civil war and bloodshed as the government looks to put down a people's rebellion. Figuring out an end-game for the Middle East country would demand all of Kerry's skills.

The selection of Kerry closes a political circle with Obama. In 2004, it was White House hopeful Kerry who asked a largely unknown Illinois state senator to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston, handing the national stage to Obama. Kerry lost that election to President George W. Bush. Four years later, Obama was the White House hopeful who succeeded where Kerry had failed.

Israel leader seeks wide coalition to face threats

(AP) ? Israel's prime minister says he wants to build a broad governing coalition to face serious security threats to Israel, including Syria's chemical weapons and Iran's nuclear program.

Benjamin Netanyahu told his outgoing Cabinet Sunday that Israel must be ready for any development in the turbulent region.

Netanyahu's ticket won the most seats in last week's parliamentary election, meaning he will likely serve another term as prime minister. But with his traditional hardline and religious allies holding only a slim majority in parliament, Netanyahu has reached out to centrist parties in hopes of building a broad coalition.

On the occasion of international Holocaust Remembrance Day, Netanyahu called Iran the world's leading Holocaust denier. He accused Tehran of seeking to destroy the Jewish state, and said Israel takes the threats seriously.

HP web store leaks 14-inch Chromebook Pavilion, to be unveiled on February 17

HP crafting 14inch Chromebook Pavilion, to be unveiled on February 17

Hewlett-Packard didn't have the best 2012, but that's not stopping the US company from getting on the Chromebook bandwagon. The HP Chromebook Pavilion was spotted by Slashgear on HP's own web store, despite the additional information section noting a February 17 "ad embargo" on the information. The little 14-inch Chromebook runs Google's eponymous OS with an Intel Celeron 847 CPU clocked at 1.1GHz, an Intel HD GPU, 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM (expandable up to 4GB), and 16GB of SSD storage space, put to use on the 14-inch HD BrightView LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 resolution). A trio of old-school USB 2.0 slots an HDMI out, and an ethernet jack make up the lion's share of ports, while an SD card slot adds expandable storage options. The 2.55Ah lithium-ion battery included will last up to (approximately) four hours and 15 minutes, though we'd like to put that to the test ourselves before trusting the specs sheet. Of course, it looks like it won't be too long before we hear more and get our hands on the device, given that Feb. 17th date.

Xolo A500 debuts in India with Android 4.0

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

A new Android 4.0 smartphone known as the Xolo A500 became available within India this week, and from all appearances, it's entirely run of the mill. That said, with a price of ?6,999 ($130), it may just turn a few heads. The Xolo A500 sports a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, along with a dual-core 1GHz CPU (Snapdragon S4 Play) and dual-SIM functionality. You'll also find a 5-megapixel rear camera, along with a front-facing VGA shooter. Ofcom kicks off 4G spectrum auction in UK

The largest mobile spectrum auction to date in the UK began this week, which is set to nearly double the wireless resources available to Britons. In all, 28 lots of spectrum are available across the 800MHz and 2600MHz bands, which will add 250MHz of spectrum to the 333MHz in use today. Telefonica (O2), Vodafone, EE, Hutchison (Three), Niche Spectrum Ventures (BT), HKT and MLL are participants in the auction, which carries a total reserve price of £1.36 billion. According to UK regulator Ofcom, the auction will take place in several rounds over the coming weeks. [Android Central]

AT&T CEO reveals interest in smartphone financing

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

Verizon's Lowell McAdam now has some company. During this week's earnings call, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson revealed that AT&T is similarly monitoring T-Mobile's shift to drop the subsidized business model and instead provide customers the ability to finance their new smartphone purchase. While Stephenson may lack grace with his words, the intent is clear: "We expect there to be some dynamics in the marketplace that -- and we'll have to respond to some of it -- we find interesting, like the handset financing that they're doing." Curiously, Stephenson admitted that AT&T has considered the approach in the past, but like Verizon, much of how his company responds will depend on consumers' reception of T-Mobile's new approach. US Cellular now offers carrier billing for online shopping

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

US Cellular announced this week that it now supports carrier billing for online purchases. The system was launched in partnership with Boku, and subscribers may pay for goods at participating merchants by entering their mobile number at checkout and then confirming the purchase with a text message. From there, customers will find the total amount of the purchase added to their wireless bill. [PhoneScoop]

AT&T working to integrate Data Sense for Windows Phone 8

Data Sense is one of the more unique features of Windows Phone 8, which allows users to monitor their data usage and squeeze more from their data plan through the magic of server-side compression. Verizon is the only carrier to support the feature within the US, but that may soon change, as AT&T has revealed that it's "exploring Data Sense and how to optimize the experience" for its subscribers. About damn time, right? [FierceWireless]

HTC forces shutdown of custom ROM site

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

A provider of many popular Sense-based ROMs is no more. This week, HTCRUU closed its doors and took its repositories offline in acquiescence to legal threats from HTC. Historically, HTC has taken an admirably lax approach to distribution of customized Sense ROMs, which are popular among enthusiasts of the company's smartphones. Naturally, many other sources exist for custom Sense blends, which raises the question of whether this move was but a one-off showing of legal force, or whether HTC will take a more active approach to ending the underground custom ROM community. Those interested can learn more of the situation on Reddit. [Android Police]

The Digital Revolution | Chris and Susan Beesley|Online Business ...

Way back in 2005, we realised that there were going to be huge changes in the way that people would earn their income in the future.? Video we knew was going to play an ever increasing role in the lives of us all providing us with solutions to problems as well as entertainment.? In 2006 when Google acquired YouTube the digital revolution was well underway.

At that time we were still working as management consultants and accountants in our own business and our clients were starting to look to the internet which was opening up huge opportunities for those prepared to be ?first to market?, to be using internet marketing ? blogging, Google PPC, and the early Social Media (Twitter and Facebook).? We are first and foremost entrepreneurs so we set about learning all that we could to help our clients which was to be fundamental in our future as online marketers in 2010. Little did we know the effect that the digital revolution would have on us ?.

One of the key influencers for us was Daniel Priestly (Author of Key Person of Influence) who was the first person to help us understand Social Media and the impact that this would have on our lives and give a voice to every entrepeneur ? he already saw the effect of the digital revolution.? Daniel has always been someone who saw the future way ahead of time ? a ?thought leader? and we were fortunate to have him appear on our TV show and explain how he saw the impact that the Digital Revolution would have on the lives of entrepreneurs forever ?.

We became the founder leaders of The Six Figure Mentors back in 2010 and always shared with the Founder Stuart Ross the vision for internet entrepreneurs and the launch of The Digital Experts Academy is that dream come true.

Here the Digital Experts Academy share their thoughts of the Digital Revolution and how each of us can now capitalise on what has become a digital economy

The Industrial Revolution of the 19th-century led to enormous increases in population, expansion of cities, and a boom in technology and the economy. It began in Britain during the late 18th-century and quickly spread across Europe and on to the rest of the world. Everything that was once done by hand slowly became mechanized, and the world began to change.

What was the result of all this industrialization? Tremendous wealth was created by some; however, tremendous hardship was felt by others as mechanization eliminated their jobs. More?efficient ways of producing goods?were being developed; unfortunately, not everyone benefited equally. Farmers were now forced to produce more and more just to survive and make ends meet. The real winners were the entrepreneurs who took advantage of the emerging technologies to create products, solutions, and services that didn?t exist before.

Then came the Great Depression in the 1930s. We have all seen the pictures of people standing in line for food and work. Despite the circumstances, there were some, who not only avoided that fate, but also found ways to become more?successful. In fact, there were more millionaires created during the Great Depression than any other time in history. How was that possible?

One such entrepreneur was Andrew Carnegie, a magnate of the steel industry in the early 20th century. He commissioned magnate author Napoleon Hill to write a book about the principles of success by reverse-engineering the success secrets of the wealthiest, most successful entrepreneurs in the world. Napoleon interviewed 400 of these millionaire entrepreneurs and condensed their common themes of success into his famous book ?Think and Grow Rich?.

As the economy transitioned, a huge transfer of wealth began. Those who were correctly positioned benefited enormously. Those who weren?t, found themselves in line for food stamps and handout.

Productivity increased, the more technology advanced, creating less?reliance?on?expensive human labor. Then came the Jet Age, Atomic Age, and the Space Age. All of these were part of the Second Industrial Revolution, and each of these created tremendous wealth for a?privileged?few. For millions of others, it meant new competition and obsoletion.

When written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters. One represents danger, and the other represents opportunity. We are now in the beginning of an even bigger revolution. For some, this means crisis, for others, opportunity.

If history repeats itself, there will be yet another massive transfer of wealth.?There will be those on the cutting edge of change who will benefit, and everyone else.

In the 80?s, a shift began from traditional industry, (that the industrial revolution brought through industrialization), to an economy based on the manipulation and exchange of data and information. Whereas the Industrial Revolution created tremendous wealth by allowing the mass production of goods, the Digital Revolution has created what we believe is even a greater opportunity to create wealth.

During the Digital Revolution, we gained the ability to transfer information freely; we now had instant access to information that would have been difficult or impossible to find previously. As we all know,?this has changed how the world functions and communicates dramatically.

Here are a few examples of how far we have come in 20-30 years:

    • Vinyl records gave way to CDs, then MP3s, and now streaming audio
    • The VHS tape gave way to the DVD and Blu-ray, and now, streaming video
    • Pay-phones?gave way to cell phones
    • Dial up Internet gave way to high speed digital cable
    • The typewriter gave way to the printer
    • Mail evolved to the facsimile, then email
    • Film photography transitioned to digital photography

In 1995, Nicholas Negroponte wrote Being Digital, a book that analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the advancement of technology. He also predicted how the technologies will evolve.

Be it newspapers, entertainment or sex, Negropronte predicted that we are headed towards a future where everything that can be will be digitized.

Negroponte predicted that his own book made of ?unwieldy atoms? will probably be replaced by a digital copy in the future. (Several e-books exist of Being Digital making the quote rather prophetic.)

Atoms make up physical, tangible products. Digital information, on the other hand, is made up of bits, the smallest unit of information on a computer. (Ones and zeros, to be precise.)

All products and forms of information that are now made of atoms (books, CDs, etc.) will eventually be digitized and made into bits of information that can be shared and exchanged instantaneously.

A major landmark in the revolution was the transition from analog to digitally recorded music. In the 1980s, the digital format of optical CDs replaced analog formats such as vinyl records and cassette tapes, as the popular medium of choice.

Motorola created the first mobile phone in 1983. Towards the end of the 1980s, having some knowledge of computers became necessary for many jobs.

In 1992, the World Wide Web was released to the public. It didn?t take long, and by 1996, the Internet was in the mainstream consciousness and many businesses listed websites in their ads.

By 1999, almost every country had a connection, and more than half of Americans used the Internet on a regular basis.

After revolutionizing society in the developed world in the 1990s, in the 2000s, the digital revolution spread to the developing world.

Check out these Digital Revolution stats (Source: Wikipedia)

    1990

    • Cell phone subscribers: 12.4 million (0.25% of the world population in 1990)
    • Internet users: 2.8 million (0.05% of the world population in 1990)

    2000

    • Cell phone subscribers: 1.1 Billion (19% of the world population in 2002)
    • Internet users: 631 million (11% of the world population in 2002)

    2010

    • Cell phone subscribers: 4 Billion (67% of the world population in 2010)
    • Internet users: 1.8 Billion (26.6% of the world population in 2010)

As you can see, by 2010, almost 2 billion people used the Internet. That?s almost three times the number in 2000. By 2010, 4 billion people were using cell phones,?compared to just over a billion in 2000.

By 2015, tablet computers and smartphones are expected to exceed personal computers in Internet usage.

The bottom line is this: Industry is becoming more information-intensive and less labor and capital-intensive. This means that more and more traditional barriers to success in business are being removed.

In the traditional economy, investments in human capital?and financial capital are critical to the success of a new venture. However, as demonstrated by Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook and a million other tech startups, it is now possible for a group of relatively inexperienced people with limited capital to succeed on a large scale in the digital economy.

The good news in all of this is that there is now a whole new world of possibility in the increasingly virtual world. Things that were unimaginable in the traditional economy are all of a sudden possible. Many of our success stories are from people that would never have?stood a chance of success in the traditional economy.

Instead having to risk life and limb to prospect for gold, virtually anyone with a computer and access to the Internet, can access the Digital Gold Rush.

If you?ve ever said to yourself, ?I wish I?d bought Google stock early on??, or, ?I wish I had bought into Apple as a startup??, you know that all too familiar feeling of being left behind when you?ve passed up a significant opportunity.

Nobody knows for certain where the Digital Revolution will take us. Some believe it may lead to digital cities, economies, and societies sometime in the future. Others, like Ray Kurzweil, believe the day will come when artificial intelligence will super-cede human intelligence and computers will control the world!

Regardless of where we are headed, one thing?s for sure ? there is a ton of opportunity to be capitalized on by those who are smart. You want to be on the cutting edge of these changes not only to capitalize on the opportunity created by the change in times but to avoid being crushed, outsourced, eliminated, and made redundant.

They ask the question ?History has taught us some hugely important lessons over and over again. On which side of history will you be??

Aurora Health Care To Lay Off Employees Because Of Obamacare

It looks like Obamacare is having some negative effects on the industry it was intended to help.

Dr. Nick Turkal, CEO of Wisconsin-based non-profit health care provider Aurora Health Care, announced earlier this month that his employer would be cutting jobs due to Obamacare, The Journal Times reports. In a letter to employees he wrote that the company would be receiving $13 million less in government reimbursements forcing it to make ?position eliminations plus discontinuation of some positions in the coming weeks.?

The cuts will be small considering Aurora?s 30,000 current employees but things could get worse in the future. Already, staff has been instructed to cut costs by avoiding making color copies; physicians serving Medicare patients may receive a cut in payments.

?We don?t want people to be afraid, but things are different,? Aurora spokeswoman Myrle Croasdale told the Journal Times.

Aurora isn?t the only one in the health care industry to claim Obamacare is forcing layoffs. Orlando Health, a Florida network of community and specialty hospitals, said it would be laying off 400 employees due to new Obamacare costs, One News Now reports. Likewise, small medical device company ADM Tronics says Obamacare will mean the company will have to lay off employees for the first time in over a decade, according to Fox News.

Obamacare has had positive effects on the health care industry, as well, however. While these companies have reported increased costs, hospitals and insurance companies alike are expected to receive a large influx in payments due to the new health law, Forbes reports. As a result, investors are betting that the industry will see big profits, already driving stocks of various health care companies in the S&P 500 up 7.3 percent this year, The Washington Post reports.

10 Ways to Get Better Social Marketing Results

Social media can be a great lead generation tool for your small business. Make sure to capitalize on those leads with the help of a simple CRM like Base.

    ?

If you are trying your best to leverage the many social marketing sites that exist, you?re not alone.? Many businesses of all sizes are doing their best to figure out how to best capitalize on tools like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and others. ?Here are some tips to help you in that regard:

1: Develop a strategy and regularly revisit it.

In order for you to succeed with social marketing you?ll need to gain an understanding of how each tool works and develop a strategy and schedule for orchestrating your strategy.

Furthermore, you?ll need to revisit it often so that you can see what is working well and what is not.? You?re more likely to succeed with implementing a thoughtful and consistent strategy rather than simply creating accounts and trying to make time for them.

    2: Make sure you?re social.

Social sites are supposed to be social. If you?re just pushing out links and status updates and not socializing with others, you?re not ?getting? the purposes of social media. That said, remember that what goes on the internet is forever (usually even if it?s deleted) and that appearances mean everything. The right blend of professional and sociable is important.

    3: Monitor your accounts.

It?s important to not only use your accounts but to monitor them. By watching what?s happening you?ll be able to see what sorts of results you are getting and you?ll be able to quickly deal with questions or escalations. It has become commonplace for customers to take to tools like Twitter to make complaints about a company. This can be stressful but it presents a good opportunity to show your customers what your customer service skills are made of. Be sure that you or one of your staff members (or even an agency that offers this as a service) is continually monitoring your social marketing accounts.

4: Integrate other activities into social media and vice versa.

One of the great things about social media sites is the fact that they can be integrated into other sites and vice versa. Leveraging this ability can help you get better results as well as save time on your online marketing and strategizing.

You can add social bookmarking tools to your website to help your customers share your content on Twitter, Facebook, and so on. You can encourage sign-ups to sites and applications by enabling people to quickly and easily sign up with their Facebook account. You can set your business blog up to automatically post your updates on your Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other accounts. Conversely, you can add a Facebook or Twitter widget to your blog or add a plug-in for lead generation to your Facebook page that feeds information into your CRM tool.

There are many ways to leverage social media to send traffic to your website and to leverage your website to build up your social media profiles and following.

5: Follow good social marketing etiquette.

It?s not the end of the world if you are a late bloomer in the social marketing space but you don?t want this to be glaringly obvious. Many of your customers and prospects are extremely social media savvy. Learning the socially acceptable etiquette rules is important so that you show customers you are a consummate professional. If you appear to be a newbie on these tools, people probably won?t take you seriously. A bit of research and reading some tips guides for various tools can help you avoid looking unprofessional.

6: Analyze your website traffic reports.

This will help you determine where you are getting results and traffic from. You can use this info to help you tweak a strategy or spend even more time somewhere that is bringing you great results.

7: Leverage great tools to help you.

Social marketing can be time consuming. But there are tools that can help in many ways including helping you save time with automatic posting and extracting valuable analytics for you to use for strategy purposes.

    8: Watch your competitors

Competitive analysis is vital in the current day and age and social marketing makes it easier than ever because of the transparent nature of the web. Watching your competitors can help you see what they are doing well and what they aren?t doing so well and this info can help you improve your approach.

9: Listen to your customers and learn about them.

Sites like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and others can help you gain invaluable insight for future reference. Don?t neglect to pay close attention to what sort of reaction you get from various strategies with these tools. They can help you build strong bonds and loyalty with your customers.

10: Make providing value priority #1.

These online communities can be a great place to leverage your expertise and to build a brand. If you strive to provide value in everything you do, including posting helpful updates and sharing useful info (especially if it?s not always self serving) you can leverage social media to help you with your search engine optimization, your reputation, your customer relationship management, and more.

8 videos of DIY home improvement fails - Mother Nature Network

Winter is upon us and you know what that means ? it's DIY season. The frigid temperatures mean less venturing outside and more activities inside the house. Fresh New Year's resolutions have people surveying their homes, looking for something that needs fixing. Hardware store sales will be another lure, drawing in optimistic Mr. and Ms. Fix-Its like shoppers to a Walmart on Black Friday.

    ?

Another common theme for DIYers is YouTube. DIYers everywhere like to film themselves fixing up parts of their home or creating cool gadgets. Many are successful, teaching others what DIY done right looks like. But these are?not their stories. In the following videos, you'll see the faces of DIY home improvement gone wrong.

    ?

    Changing lightbulbs

The simple lightbulb change is something most of us learned in Household Chores 101. It's a straightforward procedure: Get something to stand on, unscrew the old bulb, and screw in the new one. Just make sure you've got something sturdy to stand on.

    ?

    Repositioning furniture

When you're fixing or moving heavy objects, always ask for help. You're not Superman, and good friends will usually be glad to lend a hand. Otherwise you could break the stuff you're moving ? and possibly yourself.

    ?

    Using power tools

Didn't Dad teach you to be careful with power tools when you were a kid? (Apparently having long hair and using these tools don't mix.)

    ?

    Mowing the lawn

Popping on your headphones and cutting the grass is a zen way to DIY. But first, make sure you understand the power of your lawnmower or you just might catch an unexpected ride.

    ?

    Repairing a roof

When you do a DIY project, sometimes there are red flags. When the roof you're repairing creaks louder than a rusty gate is one such flag.?

    ?

Moving unwanted furniture out of your house

One rule of thumb when you're moving furniture out of your house: safe is better than easy. And make sure your helpers know what they're doing, or you could end up spending more money than you'd get for that furniture.

    ?

    Doing 'renovation' work

What was this guy thinking? A simple understanding of physics and remembering to keep a safe distance away from potential disaster could have averted this crisis.

    ?

    Chopping down a tree

It seems easy enough ? take a chainsaw and start carving into a tree to chop it down, right? There's two things this amateur lumberjack forgot, though: a tree topples the way it leans and the bigger something is, the harder it falls.

Swallowable Camera Takes Pictures Through a Pill

You can get an X-ray to see your bones, an MRI to see your brain, and a CT scan to see virtually everything else. But getting a glimpse of the gastrointestinal tract (the esophagus, stomach, and intestines) is a little more invasive. Endoscopes have been able to provide doctors with a picture of their patients' insides, but they have their limitations: For instance, the person performing the endoscopy needs extensive training on guiding the camera down the patient's throat. It's also a time-intensive procedure that requires the patient to be sedated.

A group of doctors and engineers working at both Ninepoint Medical and Massachusetts General Hospital developed a new endoscope that gets around these hurdles by thinking small. As reported in a recent study in Nature Medicine, they miniaturized the endoscope to fit the imaging equipment into a clear capsule patients can swallow. One end of the capsule is attached by a 1-mm-wide cable tethered to a console near the patient. When it reaches the stomach, the doctor can reel it back in and take snapshots of the GI tract on its return trip.

Michalina Gora, lead author of the study and a research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, says that one of her biggest concerns was how patients coped with a long string dangling in their throat. "Sometimes, the procedure triggered a gag reflex in the patient," she says. "This can be taken care of just by breathing steadily, in and out. It opens up the GI tract's sphincters and allows the endoscope to pass through." Overall, patients prefer the swallowable endoscope to the standard version because the scan takes less time (about 5 minutes) and doesn't require sedation.

Instead of a standard camera to take pictures, the endoscope uses a laser to scan its surroundings. Then its imaging equipment tracks the reflectance of the laser beam as it scans not only the surface of the GI tract, but also cell layers beneath it, producing 3D imagery. "It's kind of like ultrasound imaging," says Brett Bouma, a co-author of the study and a professor at Harvard Medical School. "You measure the time it takes for the laser to bounce back, and determine the distance." Bouma and his colleagues have been able to use their endoscope to identify people with Barrett's esophagus, a disorder where the lining of the esophagus changes shape because of stomach acid seeping through.

In addition to packing a camera into a capsule, the team also needed to find a way to handle the 100 gigabytes of data their endoscope generates. As new data is collected, old data is simultaneously piped through a hard-drive array and converted into a viewable image. Bouma says that the endoscope's CPU can generate a real-time display at 20 frames per second, which he describes as "pretty adequate for comfortable viewing."

Eric Seibel, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington, who is not associated with this project, says the new imaging technology is promising but might encounter some stumbling blocks if it were brought into the clinic. The new endoscope's pictures can be difficult to interpret because they aren't the type of pictures doctors are accustomed to; instead, they look more like samples under a microscope. "Clinicians and pathologists have to look at the body in a different way than they're used to," he says.

Despite this stumbling block, he has high hopes for the potential of pill-size endoscopes. "Sedation accounts for one-third of the procedure's cost," he says. Because the new procedure is cheaper, it can be incorporated into routine physical exams. "You can look for diseases in the very early stages before any symptoms come up."
