On day Roddick says he'll retire, V.Williams loses

NEW YORK (AP) ? At a U.S. Open that will be remembered for goodbyes by Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters, another former No. 1 and Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams, left with a spirited second-round loss that felt nothing like a farewell.

Hours after Roddick chose the occasion of his 30th birthday to let the tennis world in on a little secret he'd been keeping ? he'll retire after his run at Flushing Meadows ends ? Williams served poorly and stumbled badly for a set and a half before recovering to make things quite competitive.

Williams came within two points of winning, but dropped five of the last six games and ended up exiting early at a tournament she's won twice, beaten 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 by sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in a nearly 3-hour match that ended at 12:19 a.m. as Thursday turned to Friday.

Asked afterward if she's ready to join Roddick in retirement, Williams replied: "No, because if I could have made two more shots, I probably could have won that match. I think there's a big difference for me because I'm beating myself. I'm not getting destroyed out there. ... If I was out there and people were killing me, maybe it's time to hang it up."

A year ago at the U.S. Open, Williams didn't get the chance to play at all in the second round, withdrawing hours before the match and announcing she had Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue.

This time, buoyed by chants of "Let's go, Venus!" in a mostly empty Arthur Ashe Stadium ? perhaps spectators figured in the second set that Kerber was on her way to a swift victory ? Williams found the resolve and energy to put aside her 16 double-faults and 60 total unforced errors and help produce as entertaining a contest as the arena has hosted this week.

"I know this is not proper tennis etiquette, but this is the first time I've ever played here that the crowd has been behind me like that. Today I felt American, you know, for the first time at the U.S. Open," Williams said. "So I've waited my whole career to have this moment and here it is."

At changeovers in the third set, trying to concentrate on her coach's game plan, Kerber draped a white towel over her head, looking a bit like a little kid dressing as a ghost for Halloween. She would lift the towel's edge every so often so she could tuck a water bottle underneath and take a sip.

"Venus is such a great player. ... Everybody was against me," Kerber said, referring to the crowd, "but it doesn't matter."

It all came a day after four-time major champion Clijsters, who is 29, played the final singles match of her career, and while the 32-year-old Williams never has uttered a word indicating she's thinking about leaving the sport, she is no longer the player she once was.

"Obviously, being on the losing end of a match like this isn't a lot of fun," Williams said. "Today all I had was fight, because I didn't play well."

In addition to her 2000 and 2001 trophies from the U.S. Open, and five titles from Wimbledon, Williams was the runner-up at major tournaments seven times. In 16 years of Grand Slam action, since her debut in 1997, Williams had never gone through an entire season without making at least one fourth-round appearance at a major.

Until 2012, when she never even made the third round once. She missed the Australian Open while still working her way back onto the tour, then lost in the second round at the French Open and the first round at Wimbledon.

For so long the owner of one of the most feared serves on the women's tour ? surpassed only, perhaps, by her younger sister Serena's ? Williams took quite a while to get going against Kerber, who was a semifinalist in New York last year. Williams was broken each of the first five times she served and nine times overall.

"It's been a long time; I usually don't have that many breaks," Williams said.

She only hit one ace, more than 1 1/2 hours into the match, in her 10th service game of the evening.

Kerber reeled off six consecutive games in one stretch from the first set to the second, while Williams' mother, Oracene Price, rested her chin on her right hand in the stands. Williams made things interesting, though.

"I was nervous at the end of the second set. I mean, I was a little bit nervous and playing also not so aggressive. I was too defensive," Kerber said.

Then, after Williams led 4-2 in the third set, and was two points away from victory while leading 5-4 as Kerber served, it all came apart again down the stretch for the American.

Usually stoic during matches, whether winning or losing, Williams was as animated as she gets, raising a clenched fist or yelling "Come on!" after those rare instances when she did control the action ? and dropping her head or rolling her eyes or even swiping her racket on the court after missed shots.

It was the left-handed Kerber's tour-leading 55th match win of the year, and she even showed off a little ingenuity, twice shifting the racket to her right hand to extend exchanges. She even won one, somehow connecting with enough oomph righty to get the ball over to the other side. Williams, perhaps stunned the point wasn't over, pushed a swinging backhand volley into the net while staggering forward.

That kind of night for Williams, who even had issues with an earring that came out of her right lobe and the wrapping on her racket handle, which she replaced during a changeover.

Her U.S. Open is over, and Roddick's career will be whenever his last match of this tournament ends.

He made his surprising announcement at a hastily arranged news conference at the site of his biggest triumph ? the 2003 championship, the last time an American man won a Grand Slam singles trophy.

"I just feel like it's time," said Roddick, who is seeded 20th. "I don't know that I'm healthy enough or committed enough to go another year. I've always wanted to, in a perfect world, finish at this event. I have a lot of family and friends here. I've thought all year that I would know when I got to this tournament. When I was playing my first round, I knew."

He is scheduled to play 19-year-old Bernard Tomic of Australia in the second round Friday night.

Roddick's impending departure overshadowed some otherwise noteworthy on-court developments Thursday afternoon.

There was the loss by fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 2008 Australian Open runner-up, against a man ranked 52nd.

And there was a spate of victories by American men, two who are Roddick's contemporaries and good pals (32-year-old James Blake and 30-year-old Mardy Fish), and two who have been viewed as possible successors as the best the country has to offer in the sport (19-year-old Jack Sock and 24-year-old Sam Querrey).

"I saw the press conference just before I came out here. I had a feeling, thought it might be, because he's someone who puts heart and soul into every match. It gets tougher as you get older, and I don't think he could keep doing it the same way," said the 115th-ranked Blake, whose 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 upset of No. 24 Marcel Granollers of Spain was stunning for its ease.

No. 23-seeded Fish came back to beat two-time U.S. Open semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, the tournament-record 10th match in which a man erased a two-set deficit and came all the way back to win.

Davydenko's takeaway?

Men should be playing best-of-three-set matches at Grand Slam tournaments, the way women do.

"Why (do) girls play best of three sets and we should play best of five sets and have the same prize money?" Davydenko said, reviving a familiar debate.

"Why are we playing five-set matches? We need to play best of three in Grand Slams. Everybody will support (that idea, even Roger) Federer. For Federer, it's easy to win in one hour, two sets. No need to run (for) a third set," Davydenko said.

Of course, for Federer, winning three sets before his opponent does never has been much of a problem, and the 17-time major champion moved into the third round with a routine 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 83rd-ranked Bjorn Phau of Germany on Thursday night.

Naturally, he was asked about Roddick, a guy Federer beat in all four Grand Slam finals they played against each other, including one at the U.S. Open and three at Wimbledon.

"Oh, man. He's a great man," Federer said. "I've had some great battles with him for a long, long time. Obviously, the Wimbledon finals come to mind, the ones we played together. He's a great, great competitor and a great champion, really."

Looking ahead to Friday, Federer also mentioned that he thinks Roddick "truly deserves a great ovation, a great atmosphere, a great crowd. ... I'm definitely going to watch it. It's not one to miss, and I hope it's not his last."

Querrey also echoed the sentiments of plenty of others about Roddick's decision.

"He's been my biggest role model the last 10 years, playing tennis, watching tennis. He's been a really great guy, a great leader to us all. Nice and kind. Really generous to the up-and-comers," Querrey said after beating Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the third round. "For me, for ... the 18-year-olds now, he's just been an unbelievable champion, a Hall of Famer."

While few seemed to have an inkling that Roddick would say farewell during these two weeks, 14-time major champion Serena Williams, for one, was not taken aback.

Indeed, after beating Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 6-2, 6-4, the younger Williams said she knew this was coming.

"I mean, he told me a while ago ? last year ? that this would be it," she said. "We were talking about it. I was just thinking, 'Change your mind, Andy. Change your mind.' But I guess he didn't."

Ask A Realtor Spotlight: Beverly Hourlier | REALTOR.com? Blogs

Ask A Realtor Spotlight: Beverley Hourlier photo
The latest interview in our series spotlighting the Realtors who answer the questions in the Ask A Realtor section is Beverley Hourlier of San Diego, California. In 1996, Beverley (Powers) Hourlier became an assistant to Huffman Construction and Real Estate. That was her first taste of real estate sales. Mr. Huffman was so impressed by her eye for detail and her ability to connect with the public that he sponsored her Real Estate License. After Huffman closed, she joined Century 21 and learned all she could about real estate marketing and sales. She was recruited by a new company, Grub & Ellis Residential and fast became a noted agent in University City and Clairemont. Grub & Ellis was purchase by Coldwell Banker, where she became a trainer, mentor, Assistant Manager and finally Manager of the Clairemont Office where her husband, Phil joined her after he received his Real Estate License.

A few years after receiving her Broker?s License, Bev Hourlier opened her own Real Estate Office with Phil, servicing all of San Diego County. After just 2 years, they now have 7 agents, a Property Management Division, and pride themselves on superior customer satisfaction, expert marketing and negotiation. HC Realty Services has grown to become noted internet marketers, and experienced in the foreclosure and Short Sale market, helping many families each year avoid foreclosure and start a new life.

1) How has the market in the San Diego area changed in the past few years?
The market in San Diego has changed dramatically over the last 4 years due to the sub-prime loans and decreasing values. I started my career in the late 1990?s when it was also a down market with many foreclosures. Certainly nothing like today, but I still learned how to work in this type of market and how to deal with the depressed values, depressed and distressed homeowners. Realtors who started their career during our increasing market days had it easy. They didn?t have to learn marketing, advertising and internet strategies because properties sold quicker than you could put a sign in the yard. Today it takes more than just a sign or postcard. And I am thankful (not at the time) that I had to learn ?the hard way? because I knew what to do to get properties sold when the market turned down.

2) On your website you state that over 90% of your business is from referrals, what is your best tip for Realtors to get great referrals?
I believe referrals are the life of any business. To get and keep referrals you have to ask for them. I ask when I first meet a client who else they know that I can help buy or sell or help them through a difficult time by short selling. I ask again during the process and ask again at the end. Also staying in touch by remembering their birthday or some other reason a couple of times a month keep you in their thoughts.

3) What response have you had from your book on short selling?
My response on my book ?Should I Short Sale My Home? has been tremendous. I wrote it for homeowners to give them information so that they could make informed decisions during this difficult time. 75% of distressed homeowners who have been foreclosed on never asked for help, either from their lender or a professional such as a tax professional, lawyer or Realtor. Education is always key when making important real estate decisions.

4) Your philosophy on real estate is that it is more about customer service than sales, what does this mean to you when dealing with clients?
I believe customer service is a lost art. If you focus on helping your client to the best of your abilities and beyond their expectations, then the connections, referrals and transactions will follow. I treat my clients like family. I deal with their money as I would with mine, and I think about them first and their needs, not my paycheck.

5) You are an active volunteer within the community including helping with a yearly canned food drive, what do you feel a Realtor?s role is with regards to community service?
I believe a Realtor should be active in their community and give back. After all it is where we live, work and have our families, too! If you seriously care about your community, it will show and people will trust you to help them when they need advice about their home.

Archos unveils 7-inch GamePad with physical controls, Ice Cream Sandwich for 'less than ?150'

DNP EMBARGO Archos unveils ICSrunning GamePad with physical controls

Archos already has its hands in the kiddie-tablet market, with its 7-inch Arnova Child Pad, and it's taking on the productivity-minded crowd with its keyboard-toting 101 XS. Now the company is going after another niche segment with the just-announced GamePad. The 7-inch slate runs Android 4.0 with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and a quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU, and it sports physical gaming controls in addition to the standard touchscreen. Archos includes its own "game recognition and mapping tools," which ensure that the physical buttons are compatible with Android games that use virtual controls (some 1,000 titles are apparently compatible with the GamePad at this point). Of course, this is an internet-enabled device as well, and it will include full access to the Play market and WiFi connectivity when it goes on sale at the end of October. Other specs include 8GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card slot that adds up to 64GB. There's also a mini-HDMI connection for outputting content to your TV. For now, Archos is only announcing pricing as "less than €150", and the device will drop in the US and Europe at the same time. For now, the below-the-break press release will have to satisfy your curiosity.

Paul Ryan: ?College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms?

TAMPA -- Paul Ryan worked on this speech for weeks.

The Republican vice presidential candidate used his remarks to the 2012 Republican National Convention as an opportunity to introduce his family, promote Mitt Romney's vision for economic recovery, draw contrasts with President Barack Obama and profess the role of faith in his life. He even dropped in a quick line about Led Zeppelin, his favorite band.

Ryan tore into Obama's federal health care law that passed in 2010, the president's most prized legislative accomplishment. Ryan revived an attack from the campaign trail, accusing the president of passing the law "at the expense of the elderly" by trimming the growth in Medicare spending to pay for it. Between the men on the Republican ticket, Ryan is perhaps the better candidate to address health care, given Romney's support for a state-based proposal with similar provisions.

Ryan also made an enthusiastic appeal to young voters, attempting to tie Obama's policies to the unemployment rate among college graduates.

"College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms," Ryan said, "staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life." He went on to paint the future of Americans as an "adventureless journey," that relies on government programs from cradle to grave.

At times, Ryan overstepped, appearing to blame Obama for the closing of a plant in his district that shut down before the president even took office. When he railed against Obama's stimulus program, a massive infusion of government spending that passed in the president's first 100 days in office, Ryan neglected to mention that his own office requested that funds be directed to help businesses in his home state.

As a whole, Ryan portrayed a country that isn't better off than it was four years earlier, one that moves from crisis to crisis without an end in sight.

"It began with a financial crisis; it ends with a job crisis," Ryan said of Obama's first term in office. "It began with a housing crisis they alone didn't cause; it ends with a housing crisis they didn't correct."

The speech, which gave Ryan more exposure to voters than he's ever had in his public career, will likely set the tone for how Romney's campaign will use him for the rest of the fall campaign.

Mr. Chairman, delegates, and fellow citizens: I am honored by the support of this convention for vice president of the United States.

I accept the duty to help lead our nation out of a jobs crisis and back to prosperity ? and I know we can do this.

I accept the calling of my generation to give our children the America that was given to us, with opportunity for the young and security for the old ? and I know that we are ready.

Our nominee is sure ready. His whole life has prepared him for this moment ? to meet serious challenges in a serious way, without excuses and idle words. After four years of getting the run-around, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney.

I'm the newcomer to the campaign, so let me share a first impression. I have never seen opponents so silent about their record, and so desperate to keep their power.

They've run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division are all they've got left.

With all their attack ads, the president is just throwing away money ? and he's pretty experienced at that. You see, some people can't be dragged down by the usual cheap tactics, because their ability, character, and plain decency are so obvious ? and ladies and gentlemen, that is Mitt Romney.

For my part, your nomination is an unexpected turn. It certainly came as news to my family, and I'd like you to meet them: My wife Janna, our daughter Liza, and our boys Charlie and Sam.

The kids are happy to see their grandma, who lives in Florida. There she is ? my Mom, Betty.

My Dad, a small-town lawyer, was also named Paul. Until we lost him when I was 16, he was a gentle presence in my life. I like to think he'd be proud of me and my sister and brothers, because I'm sure proud of him and of where I come from, Janesville, Wisconsin.

I live on the same block where I grew up. We belong to the same parish where I was baptized. Janesville is that kind of place.

The people of Wisconsin have been good to me. I've tried to live up to their trust. And now I ask those hardworking men and women, and millions like them across America, to join our cause and get this country working again.

When Governor Romney asked me to join the ticket, I said, "Let's get this done" ? and that is exactly, what we're going to do.

President Barack Obama came to office during an economic crisis, as he has reminded us a time or two. Those were very tough days, and any fair measure of his record has to take that into account. My home state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory.

A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: "I believe that if our government is there to support you ? this plant will be here for another hundred years." That's what he said in 2008.

Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.

Right now, 23 million men and women are struggling to find work. Twenty-three million people, unemployed or underemployed. Nearly one in six Americans is living in poverty. Millions of young Americans have graduated from college during the Obama presidency, ready to use their gifts and get moving in life. Half of them can't find the work they studied for, or any work at all.

So here's the question: Without a change in leadership, why would the next four years be any different from the last four years?

The first troubling sign came with the stimulus. It was President Obama's first and best shot at fixing the economy, at a time when he got everything he wanted under one-party rule. It cost $831 billion ? the largest one-time expenditure ever by our federal government.

It went to companies like Solyndra, with their gold-plated connections, subsidized jobs, and make-believe markets. The stimulus was a case of political patronage, corporate welfare, and cronyism at their worst. You, the working men and women of this country, were cut out of the deal.

What did the taxpayers get out of the Obama stimulus? More debt. That money wasn't just spent and wasted ? it was borrowed, spent, and wasted.

Maybe the greatest waste of all was time. Here we were, faced with a massive job crisis ? so deep that if everyone out of work stood in single file, that unemployment line would stretch the length of the entire American continent. You would think that any president, whatever his party, would make job creation, and nothing else, his first order of economic business.

But this president didn't do that. Instead, we got a long, divisive, all-or-nothing attempt to put the federal government in charge of health care.

Obamacare comes to more than two thousand pages of rules, mandates, taxes, fees, and fines that have no place in a free country.

The president has declared that the debate over government-controlled health care is over. That will come as news to the millions of Americans who will elect Mitt Romney so we can repeal Obamacare.

And the biggest, coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly.

You see, even with all the hidden taxes to pay for the health care takeover, even with new taxes on nearly a million small businesses, the planners in Washington still didn't have enough money. They needed more. They needed hundreds of billions more. So, they just took it all away from Medicare. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama. An obligation we have to our parents and grandparents is being sacrificed, all to pay for a new entitlement we didn't even ask for. The greatest threat to Medicare is Obamacare, and we're going to stop it.

In Congress, when they take out the heavy books and wall charts about Medicare, my thoughts go back to a house on Garfield Street in Janesville. My wonderful grandma, Janet, had Alzheimer's and moved in with Mom and me. Though she felt lost at times, we did all the little things that made her feel loved.

We had help from Medicare, and it was there, just like it's there for my Mom today. Medicare is a promise, and we will honor it. A Romney-Ryan administration will protect and strengthen Medicare, for my Mom's generation, for my generation, and for my kids and yours.

So our opponents can consider themselves on notice. In this election, on this issue, the usual posturing on the Left isn't going to work. Mitt Romney and I know the difference between protecting a program, and raiding it. Ladies and gentlemen, our nation needs this debate. We want this debate. We will win this debate.

Obamacare, as much as anything else, explains why a presidency that began with such anticipation now comes to such a disappointing close.

It began with a financial crisis; it ends with a job crisis.

It began with a housing crisis they alone didn't cause; it ends with a housing crisis they didn't correct.

It began with a perfect Triple-A credit rating for the United States; it ends with a downgraded America.

It all started off with stirring speeches, Greek columns, the thrill of something new. Now all that's left is a presidency adrift, surviving on slogans that already seem tired, grasping at a moment that has already passed, like a ship trying to sail on yesterday's wind.

President Obama was asked not long ago to reflect on any mistakes he might have made. He said, well, "I haven't communicated enough." He said his job is to "tell a story to the American people" ? as if that's the whole problem here? He needs to talk more, and we need to be better listeners?

Ladies and gentlemen, these past four years we have suffered no shortage of words in the White House. What's missing is leadership in the White House. And the story that Barack Obama does tell, forever shifting blame to the last administration, is getting old. The man assumed office almost four years ago ? isn't it about time he assumed responsibility?

In this generation, a defining responsibility of government is to steer our nation clear of a debt crisis while there is still time. Back in 2008, candidate Obama called a $10 trillion national debt "unpatriotic" ? serious talk from what looked to be a serious reformer.

Yet by his own decisions, President Obama has added more debt than any other president before him, and more than all the troubled governments of Europe combined. One president, one term, $5 trillion in new debt.

He created a bipartisan debt commission. They came back with an urgent report. He thanked them, sent them on their way, and then did exactly nothing.

Republicans stepped up with good-faith reforms and solutions equal to the problems. How did the president respond? By doing nothing ? nothing except to dodge and demagogue the issue.

So here we are, $16 trillion in debt and still he does nothing. In Europe, massive debts have put entire governments at risk of collapse, and still he does nothing. And all we have heard from this president and his team are attacks on anyone who dares to point out the obvious.

They have no answer to this simple reality: We need to stop spending money we don't have.

My Dad used to say to me: "Son. You have a choice: You can be part of the problem, or you can be part of the solution." The present administration has made its choices. And Mitt Romney and I have made ours: Before the math and the momentum overwhelm us all, we are going to solve this nation's economic problems.

And I'm going to level with you: We don't have that much time. But if we are serious, and smart, and we lead, we can do this.

After four years of government trying to divide up the wealth, we will get America creating wealth again. With tax fairness and regulatory reform, we'll put government back on the side of the men and women who create jobs, and the men and women who need jobs.

My Mom started a small business, and I've seen what it takes. Mom was 50 when my Dad died. She got on a bus every weekday for years, and rode 40 miles each morning to Madison. She earned a new degree and learned new skills to start her small business. It wasn't just a new livelihood. It was a new life. And it transformed my Mom from a widow in grief to a small businesswoman whose happiness wasn't just in the past. Her work gave her hope. It made our family proud. And to this day, my Mom is my role model.

Behind every small business, there's a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores ? these didn't come out of nowhere. A lot of heart goes into each one. And if small businesspeople say they made it on their own, all they are saying is that nobody else worked seven days a week in their place. Nobody showed up in their place to open the door at five in the morning. Nobody did their thinking, and worrying, and sweating for them. After all that work, and in a bad economy, it sure doesn't help to hear from their president that government gets the credit. What they deserve to hear is the truth: Yes, you did build that.

We have a plan for a stronger middle class, with the goal of generating 12 million new jobs over the next four years.

In a clean break from the Obama years, and frankly from the years before this president, we will keep federal spending at 20 percent of GDP, or less. That is enough. The choice is whether to put hard limits on economic growth, or hard limits on the size of government, and we choose to limit government.

I learned a good deal about economics, and about America, from the author of the Reagan tax reforms ? the great Jack Kemp. What gave Jack that incredible enthusiasm was his belief in the possibilities of free people, in the power of free enterprise and strong communities to overcome poverty and despair. We need that same optimism right now.

And in our dealings with other nations, a Romney-Ryan administration will speak with confidence and clarity. Wherever men and women rise up for their own freedom, they will know that the American president is on their side. Instead of managing American decline, leaving allies to doubt us and adversaries to test us, we will act in the conviction that the United States is still the greatest force for peace and liberty that this world has ever known.

President Obama is the kind of politician who puts promises on the record, and then calls that the record. But we are four years into this presidency. The issue is not the economy as Barack Obama inherited it, not the economy as he envisions it, but this economy as we are living it.

College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. Everyone who feels stuck in the Obama economy is right to focus on the here and now. And I hope you understand this too, if you're feeling left out or passed by: You have not failed, your leaders have failed you.

None of us have to settle for the best this administration offers ? a dull, adventureless journey from one entitlement to the next, a government-planned life, a country where everything is free but us.

Listen to the way we're spoken to already, as if everyone is stuck in some class or station in life, victims of circumstances beyond our control, with government there to help us cope with our fate.

It's the exact opposite of everything I learned growing up in Wisconsin, or at college in Ohio. When I was waiting tables, washing dishes, or mowing lawns for money, I never thought of myself as stuck in some station in life. I was on my own path, my own journey, an American journey where I could think for myself, decide for myself, define happiness for myself. That's what we do in this country. That's the American Dream. That's freedom, and I'll take it any day over the supervision and sanctimony of the central planners.

By themselves, the failures of one administration are not a mandate for a new administration. A challenger must stand on his own merits. He must be ready and worthy to serve in the office of president.

We're a full generation apart, Governor Romney and I. And, in some ways, we're a little different. There are the songs on his iPod, which I've heard on the campaign bus and on many hotel elevators. He actually urged me to play some of these songs at campaign rallies. I said, I hope it's not a deal-breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC, and ends with Zeppelin.

A generation apart. That makes us different, but not in any of the things that matter. Mitt Romney and I both grew up in the heartland, and we know what places like Wisconsin and Michigan look like when times are good, when people are working, when families are doing more than just getting by. And we both know it can be that way again.

We've had very different careers ? mine mainly in public service, his mostly in the private sector. He helped start businesses and turn around failing ones. By the way, being successful in business ? that's a good thing.

Mitt has not only succeeded, but succeeded where others could not. He turned around the Olympics at a time when a great institution was collapsing under the weight of bad management, overspending, and corruption ? sounds familiar, doesn't it?

He was the Republican governor of a state where almost nine in ten legislators are Democrats, and yet he balanced the budget without raising taxes. Unemployment went down, household incomes went up, and Massachusetts, under Mitt Romney, saw its credit rating upgraded.

Mitt and I also go to different churches. But in any church, the best kind of preaching is done by example. And I've been watching that example. The man who will accept your nomination tomorrow is prayerful and faithful and honorable. Not only a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at its best. Not only a fine businessman, he's a fine man, worthy of leading this optimistic and good-hearted country.

Our different faiths come together in the same moral creed. We believe that in every life there is goodness; for every person, there is hope. Each one of us was made for a reason, bearing the image and likeness of the Lord of Life.

We have responsibilities, one to another ? we do not each face the world alone. And the greatest of all responsibilities, is that of the strong to protect the weak. The truest measure of any society is how it treats those who cannot defend or care for themselves.

Each of these great moral ideas is essential to democratic government ? to the rule of law, to life in a humane and decent society. They are the moral creed of our country, as powerful in our time, as on the day of America's founding. They are self-evident and unchanging, and sometimes, even presidents need reminding, that our rights come from nature and God, not from government.

The founding generation secured those rights for us, and in every generation since, the best among us have defended our freedoms. They are protecting us right now. We honor them and all our veterans, and we thank them.

The right that makes all the difference now, is the right to choose our own leaders. And you are entitled to the clearest possible choice, because the time for choosing is drawing near. So here is our pledge.

We will not duck the tough issues, we will lead.

We will not spend four years blaming others, we will take responsibility.

We will not try to replace our founding principles, we will reapply our founding principles.

The work ahead will be hard. These times demand the best of us ? all of us, but we can do this. Together, we can do this.

We can get this country working again. We can get this economy growing again. We can make the safety net safe again. We can do this.

Whatever your political party, let's come together for the sake of our country. Join Mitt Romney and me. Let's give this effort everything we have. Let's see this through all the way. Let's get this done.

Samsung announces EKGC100 Galaxy Camera with Android Jelly Bean, massive 48inch display, 21x zoom, WiFi and 4G connectivity handson video

During a visit to Samsung's headquarters in Korea earlier this year, we had a chance to talk shop with company execs. The electronics maker's existing mirrorless and point-and-shoot lineups were the primary topic of discussion, but we did catch wind of a Galaxy product possibly to come, from the camera division. A Galaxy camera? That could only mean Android, and a heavy heaping of touch and connectivity. At the time, reps admitted only that they were "considering" such a device, and declined to provide any hint as to design or functionality. And we haven't heard a further peep, until today. As you may have gathered from recent rumors, Samsung's Galaxy Note II is not the only product to be Unpacked this afternoon. Sure enough, the anticipated Galaxy Camera is also on order, and we have all the juicy details just past the break.

Typhoon hits N. Korea, still reeling from floods

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon that killed at least 10 people in South Korea hit the North early Wednesday, knocking down hundreds of trees, destroying power cables and causing blackouts in a country already struggling to rebuild from earlier flooding.

Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in North Korea because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure, but the extent of wind and rain damage in the country wasn't immediately clear Wednesday. Pyongyang, the capital, saw strong winds but little apparent damage. Cars splashed through slightly flooded streets, spraying people on crowded sidewalks.

Typhoon Bolaven began pummeling the North late Tuesday, on the country's first Youth Day since new leader Kim Jong Un took over in December. Weather officials had warned that it would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts in other parts of Asia weren't as powerful as predicted.

In South Korea, Bolaven left hundreds of thousands without power, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces. The storm also churned up rough seas that smashed two fishing ships into rocks off southern Jeju island, killing five people and leaving 10 missing.

Dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the wrecked Chinese fishing ships. The coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

The coast guard rescued 12 fishermen, and six others swam or were washed ashore.

The storm killed at least five other people across South Korea. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop and another person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials. An 80-year-old man died after a small makeshift building fell on him, officials said, and another man was killed by a falling tree.

About 1.9 million South Korean homes and businesses lost power, the National Emergency Management Agency said, though all but about 34,000 had electricity restored by Wednesday morning. Nearly 100 families were left homeless Wednesday because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled Tuesday, but airports were running normally on Wednesday. There were 860 hectares (2,130 acres) of farmland flooded and 32 ships damaged, the agency said in a statement.

The storm came as North Korea tries to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks.

Using Skillful Personal Budget Management To Save More

About 8 million SA citizens have internet access. The internet has created its own economic climate and over half of South African businesses exist online. Website capacities have improved incredibly, allowing one to achieve personal budget management without the need for paper, pen and calculator. Rather it can be automated through a link to one?s bank account or the uploading of a statement so that better financial control can be achieved.

Those who don?t take control of their finances are usually controlled by money. This causes stress, a poor annual credit report and even a loss of assets. Budgeting is much easier than many think, especially when the websites today do the work on one?s behalf.

Financial management should include an assessment of what banks are offering their clients. Every transaction through a bank costs and whilst fees might seem cheap when looked at per unit, they accrue into high expenses. There isn?t a definitive answer as to which banking institution is preferable.

Personal needs differ so it?s important to look at comparisons between the savings offerings, interest rates and administrative fees of each bank. Those with high savings would advantage from the bank with the most benefits for them but those with businesses might prefer to seek the lowest fees.

One?s monthly budget can be vastly improved when one has a break down of one?s spending. Expenditure is difficult to assess daily. A graph of monthly expenditure, however, provides a good view of where savings can be made and where one needs to cut down.

Money management also needs to focus on credit score. A poor rating can prevent a person from taking advantage of many savings opportunities. Insurance, for example, is usually more costly for people with bad scores. At the same time, cellular telephone contracts and data packages offer their own savings and people with poor scores can?t take advantage of them.

Improving credit scores is possible. Credit should be used to improve ratings, but it should be kept low. Look into each year?s credit report to find out if there are any errors. These do happen and can prevent one from getting a bond, increase interest rates and prevent further credit entirely. Credit cards need to be managed well, with regular payments and low balances.

The reward programs offered by many vendors is another way to boost personal budget management. Retailers like supermarkets offer clients loyalty programs. Choosing one?s medical insurance with care is another important way to make savings.

WORKERS' COMP FOR EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS ? Steffan ...

WORKERS? COMP FOR EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS

Both employers and workers need to know the law of Workers? Compensation. Not knowing your rights and responsibilities can be costly.

For Workers
1. Remember that Workers? Comp covers not only accidental injuries on the job, but also occupational diseases. For example, neck problems are common for dental hygienists, and shoulder problems are common for construction workers who do a lot of overhead work.
2. Not all workplace injuries are covered by Workers? Comp. The injuries must be ?accidental,? meaning something out of the ordinary work routine happened.
3. If you were partly at fault for your injury, it does not necessarily defeat your claim.
4. To keep your claim alive, it is essential to report your injury to your employer (supervisor will do) as soon as possible. A written or email report or notice is best. You must also file a Form 18 with the N.C. Industrial Commission, which can be found at the Industrial Commission?s website (www.ic.nc.gov). If a Form 18 is not filed within 2 years of your injury, you lose your right to pursue the claim.
5. Once you have healed as much as you are going to (called maximum medical improvement), you may have choices about how to settle the permanent disability part of your case. The insurance company will not tell you about those choices; they will send you the paperwork for the one they prefer, which will be the one least expensive for them.
6. If your condition gets worse and you haven?t settled in a way that closes your case, you have two years from the last check or last medical care to re-open your case for additional compensation and/or medical care. If you wait past that period to file the necessary form with the Industrial Commission, you lose your rights.

For Employers
1. The N.C. Industrial Commission recently began a crackdown on employers who are required to carry Workers? Comp insurance, but who do not. A business is required to have insurance if it has 3 or more employees, regardless whether they are full-time or part-time.
2. Businesses cannot avoid having to carry Workers? Comp insurance by calling employees independent contractors. If a worker works entirely for you, uses your tools, works hours that you set, and gets specific directions from you, he is likely an employee (legally speaking), regardless what you call him.
3. If your business hires subcontractors, be sure subs provide you a certificate of their own Workers? Comp policy. If your sub is hurt and doesn?t have her own insurance policy, she probably has a claim against your company?s policy.
4. For many businesses, buying a Workers? Comp insurance policy may not be as expensive as they think. Premiums are based on payroll and on the type of work. Insurance is expensive in lines of work where injuries occur often, like construction, home health care, auto repair, etc. Others, like those doing office or customer service work, tech companies, and retail businesses without heavy lifting, may find premiums are not as expensive as they may think.
5. When getting a quote for Workers? Comp insurance for your business, ask your agent to quote it with and without covering you as the owner. Many times the extra cost to cover the owner is minimal, and makes economic sense. If not, at least you are making an informed choice.

Whether you are an employer or a worker, you can obtain more information about Workers? Comp from the N.C. Industrial Commission (www.ic.nc.gov or 1-800-688-8349) or from an attorney whose practice includes Workers? Comp.

DC Comics left fans hanging with an image on the cover of Justice League issue #12 that shows the Man of Steel wrapped in an embrace with Wonder Woman -- their lips, oh so close. The photo shows an unstoppable kiss that Faith Hill would be proud of.

In case you were wondering, Superman's kryptonic personality wasn't the only thing that drew Wonder Woman to the now Lois Lane-free superhero.

DC Comics has teamed up with Match.com to bring you the retired dating profiles of these two superheroes, who seem to have very unique backgrounds and interests. Not your average SWF seeks similar partner, here.

Wonder Woman, for instance, lists a mythical winged horse as a former pet, and says she likes to stamp out inequality and read romance novels about vampires for fun. She also points out that she was "Amazon before it was a dot-com."

And who knew Superman would list overpowering locomotives as a sport? We have to admit though, we definitely knew he'd have a humble brag about his man cave.

Don't let Facebook's design changes trick you into sharing more info

21 hrs.

While a smidgen of lipstick won't make a pig win any beauty pageants, some?design changes may affect how easily you hand information and control?over to Facebook apps.

As?guest writer Avi Charkham points out in a post on TechCrunch,?the launch of Facebook's new App Center brought a redesigned app permissions page.?While more visually appealing ??though this is a matter of opinion ??the new design?bring some pesky changes that could trick you into exposing more personal info or granting more control to apps than you realize.

For example: The old app permission request page offered two buttons ??"allow" and "don't allow ??while the new one simple has one button (something along the lines of "play game"). This leaves some users unaware of the fact that they're about to offer an app access to information or the ability to post on their behalf. Of course, someone on Facebook's side of things could argue that the app permission page does indeed outline exactly which permissions you're granting an app when you use it, but ??as Charkham points out ? details?are listed in a tiny grey font or only visible when you hover your mouse over a little question mark symbol.

And?then there's what Charkham describes as the "friendly talk trick":

In the new App Center Facebook chose to hide the term ?Permissions?. Instead of showing ?Request for Permissions? and a button labeled ?Allow? Facebook now sends you to a page full of colorful images with a single button labeled ?Play Game?.

So what can you do to protect your privacy and avoid letting some app post on your behalf? Practice constant vigilance, of course!

Keep an eye out for the tiny print, remember that you always have a choice (except when it comes to Timeline, of course), and regularly review your privacy settings to make sure that you haven't slipped up and had an app take a whole foot when you offered it a single inch.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Tampa braces for Republican convention protests

US authorities are braced for violent protests ahead of the Republican presidential nominating convention that nominally kicks off in Tampa, Florida on Monday.

CNN obtained a copy of an alert from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security warning that anarchists may be plotting violence at the event formally crowning Mitt Romney as President Barack Obama's challenger.

Thousands of demonstrators are expected to converge on this Gulf coast city -- including a large contingent from the Occupy movement that bunkered down for months last year in scores of parks and other sites across the country.

Due to Tropical Storm Isaac, the convention will nominally open Monday and then immediately adjourn to reconvene on Tuesday, when the weather is expected to clear up.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and multi-millionaire businessman, will accept the Republican presidential nomination at the end of the week in a raucous finale to several days of political theater attended by tens of thousands of delegates, journalists and party insiders.

CNN said that the FBI-DHS memo warned that anarchists "from New York" were planning to go to Tampa to disrupt the event and might even attempt to shut down the city's bridges using improvised explosive devices.

The advisory warned that a similar plot could be under way for the Democratic National Convention, which is to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina from September 4 to September 7.

"FBI and DHS assess with high confidence anarchist extremists will target similar infrastructure in Tampa and Charlotte, with potentially significant impacts on public safety and transportation," it said, according to CNN.

The memo urged state and local law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for suspicious people trying to purchase explosive materials or obtain weapons training.

Authorities have said it hard to predict exactly how many demonstrators will swarm this Florida Gulf coast city, but say the numbers could exceed 15,000.

For the most part, authorities are anticipating peaceful protests, but are girding for the likelihood that at least some of the demonstrators will be intent on fomenting trouble.

Tampa's police department spent more than half a million dollars on special khaki uniforms for the roughly 4,000 officers who will police the event. The city also invested nearly $300,000 in the purchase of a truck specially outfitted for police commando units.

Protesters have erected what they called a "Romneyville" near the site of the convention -- an updated variation on the idea of the "Hooverville" tent cities of the Great Depression -- where protesters can be housed and fed.

There is a long tradition of public protest at the quadrennial political conventions, when the two major US political parties choose the standard bearers who will lead them into November's presidential election.

In 2000, the Democratic convention in Los Angeles saw rock-throwing protesters clash with police firing rubber bullets and lobbing tear gas canisters.

Four years later, the Republic National Convention saw parts of New York City transformed into a fortress, and police place some 1,800 people under arrest.

Democrats that same year held their party confab in Boston, Massachusetts, which also took on the aura of a garrison town complete with razor-wire fencing to keep protesters away from the main action.

Protesters in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, host of the 2008 Republican convention, faced off against baton-wielding police in full riot gear, with hundreds of people eventually placed under arrest.

Diabetes In A Can | iNform Health and Fitness Solutions

The prevalence of ?energy drinks? being sold nowadays is a massive concern to me. Even more concerning is the young demographic being targeted with such products.

Bright colours, outlandish designs, giant sized cans and marketing links to extreme activities create corporate appeal to these products. They have infiltrated service stations, supermarkets, clubs, bars and offices, with the promise of delivering a fast burst of extreme energy and outstanding performance.

Among the many ingredients found in energy drinks, there are two key substances that I want to focus on.

Sugar

At a whopping 11gms/100mL, the average ?energy drink? delivers around 40gms of sugar per 375mL serve. Consider this: of the four macronutrients that supply energy, energy drinks contain only one ? carbohydrates in the form of sugar.

Take sugar out of the equation, and all you are left with is a ?drink?!

Now consider the hormonal response that we humans have to high sugar doses: rapid spikes in blood glucose levels generate a rapid insulin response to reduce internal toxicity. The ?energy hit? from a high sugar dosage threatens the body?s state of wellbeing, and our bodies respond by clearing it out as quickly as we can.

A pretty useless energy hit! Matter of fact, it can actually work in reverse if insulin production is excessive!

However, the colourful and cleverly constructed language used in marketing are persistant, ensuring that it?s front of mind next time we?re in need of a whack. With regular consumption, slowly but surely our systems become a little more tolerant of high sugar doses and a little more resistant to the insulin produced.

Our brain continues to perceive toxicity, and takes the liberty of ordering more insulin than was once required to clear the same amount of sugar.

Eventually, insulin resistance becomes Diabetes, where the bloodstream is in a constant state of glucose contamination.

And the manufacturers of those pretty cans keep telling us that we?ll perform better.

Caffeine

The simple story on the inclusion of caffeine is this: it stimulates adrenaline, firing of a sequence of hormonal and metabolic responses that can create an energised feeling. It?s effectiveness in improving mood and alertness is well documented.

In collabaration with high sugar consumption however, there should be a warning signalled against caffeine.

Caffeine prompts a response physiologically associated with stress, initiated by cortisol to trigger the aforementioned effects. The problem in conjunction with high sugar doses is that cortisol blocks the action of insulin, exacerbating the toxic build-up of sugar.

Now consider the target market.

And we wonder why our generation is tipped to be the first to outlive our children.

Energy drinks are labelled on what they supply nutritionally. Perhaps we should lobby to have them labelled on the physiological response that they create. ?Lethargy Drink To Drive Metabolic Disease? doesn?t quite have the same ring to it!

PFT: Peyton knows he's on a one-year deal

Seattle Seahawks v Denver BroncosGetty Images

The initial reports trumpeted a five-year, $96 million contract.? The truth is that Peyton Manning signed a contract that will pay him $18 million in 2012, with no guarantees beyond that.

Peyton knows it, and he?s willing to admit it.

?End of the day, my contract really is only a one-year contract,? Manning told Woody Paige of the Denver Post.? ?That is the fact of the matter, so I think you do play with a sense of urgency.?

As Paige explains it, there?s a fairly large asterisk.? He writes that, if Peyton fails a ?neck examination? after the season, the next two years at a total of $40 million ?could be voided.?

Which means that, if Peyton simply passes the ?neck examination,? he gets another $40 million.

Paige is in the right church, but he?s perched in the wrong pew.? As we reported back in March, the Broncos can dump Peyton Manning for any reason and at any time after the 2012 season ends, up until the final day of the 2012 league year, in early March.? If they don?t part ways, Peyton will be guaranteed $40 million over the next two seasons.? The Broncos will be able to avoid the 2014 salary of $20 million only if he suffers another injury to his neck during the 2013 season.

As a result, the Broncos will be facing a $40 million decision after the season.? Which means that Peyton needs to show them enough in 2012 to persuade them to keep him around.

It?s easy to say that there?s no way the Broncos will move on.? But here?s the thing to keep in mind:? They wanted Peyton in part because only he could give them a permanent solution to the Tebow problem.? Even if they don?t keep Peyton beyond the coming season, they?ll never have to bring Tebow back.
