Let's Chat About Mexico

So you are thinking about going to Mexico. Well first of all, congratulations on deciding to take the plunge! Even if you are an avid traveler and have seen more than your own city, choosing Mexico as your next destination is fabulous! Regardless of your reasons, this is a nation that has something for everyone and will definitely not disappoint. We can put aside the obvious attributes because we all know of them. You know there are endless beaches and a tropical climate and exquisite ecosystems to explore. Also, if you have done any reading or have surfed the Internet at all, you also know that Mexican culture is wonderfully rich.

There are many other things to be aware of about Mexico, aside from those aspects that are well known. The food is wonderful, for example. Genuine Mexican food prepared traditionally is light years better than anything in restaurants back home. Prepared the way the dishes are meant to be, the correct spices are used and the ingredients are authentic and fresh. Even the street food is better than professional prepared Mexican dishes in Canada or the US. Make sure to get out from the American style resort or hotel every once in awhile and have a meal at a local cafe.

Mexico is not home. Or more specifically, Mexico is not the same as back home so don't act, talk or expect the same things to feel, look or happen the same as back home. The official language of the country is Spanish, so not everyone will speak English. It is your obligation as a visitor to the country to make an effort to speak the language. Not only will you get better service, but locals will have much more respect for you as a foreigner if you show respect for their customs and language. Make an effort and the effort will be reciprocated, plain and simple.

Mexico is not like back home, but many of the same problems are present. For example, in most large cities women do not head out alone at night. That same practice should be undertaken while visiting Mexico. Leave your valuable jewelry at home where you know its safe. Don't leave cameras and other electronics lying around where they can by scooped up by anyone - including fellow travelers. Thieves travel the world too.

Most importantly, use common sense. Be polite when asking about things that may seem odd to you. There may be a perfectly logical explanation. Be respectful, appreciative and open-minded. If you can maintain these qualities, your Mexican experience will be great!
