Verizon perceives the need for speed, primarily due to increasing streaming of video. No word on pricing or caps. But home broadband caps seem inevitable and I suspect Verizon?s hopes the speed increase will ease the pain of a cap announcement?possibly coming next month, but if not then, soon.
Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell says there are no plans for caps. OK.
The good news is you?ll be able to download a movie in a hurry if you?re willing to pay a premium price for super speed.

Verizon Ushers in New Era of Consumer Broadband; New FiOS Portfolio Features Speeds of 75, 150 and 300 Mbps

Higher Speeds Cater to Rapid Growth in Video Streaming and Multiple Internet-Connected Devices in Homes

NEW YORK ??Responding to consumer demand for ultra-high-speed home broadband service, Verizon next month will more than double the speeds of several of its?FiOS Internet?tiers ? and introduce two new tiers with even faster speeds.

The new?FiOS Internet portfolio?will feature download/upload speed tiers of 50/25 and 150/65 megabits per second (Mbps), as well as two new tiers of 75/35 and 300/65 Mbps.? The latter speed is double that of FiOS Internet?s current top speed of 150/35 Mbps, the nation?s fastest, mass scale residential Internet speed.

In addition, Verizon will continue to offer its entry-level speed of 15/5 Mbps.? The other speeds in the company?s current industry-leading FiOS Internet portfolio are 25/25, 35/35 50/20 and 150/35 Mbps.? The new speeds, to be offered in stand-alone and bundled packages, are designed to address the burgeoning growth of bandwidth-intensive applications and the increase in the number of Internet-connected devices being used simultaneously in the same household.? The speeds will also support consumers who are watching more over-the-top video programming on TVs and portable devices, and accommodate the rise in Internet-enabled applications like video and audio streaming,?home monitoring devices, video chat, multiplayer gaming and online backup services, all of which? can simultaneously sap the strength of many home broadband connections.

Bob Mudge, president of Verizon?s consumer and mass market business unit, characterized the broadband speed increases as a ?societal and technological necessity,? as secure network applications enable consumers to enjoy a ?borderless lifestyle? in which they can connect to the content they care about, anytime and anywhere.

?The ways we used the Internet and watched TV over the past 10 to 15 years have dramatically shifted,? said Mudge. ?With the emergence of smartphones, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets and gaming consoles that also serve as over-the-top devices, consumers need more bandwidth to receive the highest-quality experience.?

The higher downstream and upstream FiOS tiers that Verizon will deliver will provide customers with sustained speed and reliability of service, in contrast to intermittent speed boosts offered by cable-company competitors whose networks, unlike Verizon?s, are not all-fiber optic.

How FiOS Internet Speeds Meet Individual Needs of Consumers

Consumers will be able to choose from the new range of FiOS speed options to maximize their broadband or video experience.? For example, the 15/5 Mbps tier is best used for basic tasks such as email and Web browsing in a household of one or two Internet-connected users with several devices.? In contrast, the 50/25 Mbps tier can best serve a multiple-device household with three or more users who frequently telecommute, enjoy downloading music and photos, and viewing videos on PCs or wireless devices.

The new 75/35 Mbps tier best serves a household that?streams HD movies to the TV, downloads or uploads video files, participates in multiplayer gaming, and has three or more Internet-connected users on multiple devices.

The most powerful 150/65 and 300/65 Mbps speed tiers are designed for households of five or more Internet-connected users who want to receive the best standard- and high-definition video streaming experience on a variety of devices.

Why Video Web Traffic Is Fueling the Need for Faster Bandwidth

?Our top FiOS speed will be twice as fast as anything America has ever seen,? said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon?s consumer and mass market business unit. ?High-speed Internet no longer is just for techies, as more than half of our residential consumers already use at least a 20 Mbps Internet connection.? Streaming online video on an all-fiber-optic connection providing faster speeds is better and more reliable during peak Internet usage hours.

?As recently as 2005, video was less than 10 percent of Web traffic,? said Ritter. ?By the end of this year, we expect it to be 50 percent, growing to 90 percent in just a few years.?

Today, the average home has seven Internet-connected devices.? With the continuing increase of devices in the home using a wired or Wi-Fi Internet connection, the average home by 2015 will have between nine and 15 Internet-connected devices, said Ritter.

The majority of Verizon customers will be able to order the two fastest-speed options of 150 and 300 Mbps, which require customers to be connected via a GPON (gigabit passive optical network) terminal.? For existing customers who have a BPON (broadband passive optical network) terminal and qualify for the GPON service, the installation of a new GPON terminal will be required.

With a 300 Mbps speed, consumers can download a two-hour, standard-definition movie (1.5 gigabytes) in less than 40 seconds; and a two-hour high-definition movie (5 GB) in 2.2 minutes.? On a 150 Mbps connection, the same two-hour, SD movie can be downloaded in less than 80 seconds, and the two-hour HD movie in less than four-and-a-half minutes.

Downloading 20 high-resolution photographs (100 megabytes) would take 2.8 seconds with a 300/65 Mbps connection and 5.4 seconds using the 150/65 Mbps service.? With the 65 Mbps upstream speed, consumers can upload 200 high-resolution photos or five minutes of HD video in 31 seconds, and in 58 seconds with the 35 Mbps upstream service.

More than 13.7 million customers in parts of nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states plus parts of Florida, Texas, California and the District of Columbia can order FiOS Internet. The total will grow to 18 million as Verizon continues to deploy its all-fiber-optic network to serve more consumers and small businesses.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Escalating violence in Syria has become the ultimate no-win political situation for President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney: The deepening crisis is impossible for their campaigns to ignore but too complex for them to articulate an easy solution.

Romney has seized on the crackdown in Syria as an opportunity to dent Obama's foreign policy credentials, painting him as weak and indecisive in the face of more than a year of violence. But Romney's vague prescriptions for what he would do differently have opened him to criticism from the Obama campaign that he is weighing in from the sidelines with "nothing but tough talk" while the president does the real work of managing the crisis.

The violence in Syria hasn't captured the full attention of an American electorate consumed by the economy and other domestic issues. But the barbs being traded between the campaigns try to raise questions of leadership for the two men battling for a job filled with unexpected challenges.

Romney zeroes in on what he portrays as a lack of leadership in Obama's handling of Syria's 14-month government crackdown on opponents to the regime. Following a weekend massacre of more than 100 Syrian civilians, including dozens of women and children, Romney said the president's weakness had resulted in a "policy of paralysis."

In turn, the Obama campaign has sought to cast the president as the one bearing the responsibility for actually handling the crisis. While Obama "has demonstrated his ability to work with world leaders to resolve international conflicts," campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said, Romney has a "rudderless foreign policy agenda."

The heated rhetoric between the rival campaigns belies the fact that there are significant gaps in both candidates' policy positions on Syria and few differences in the specifics they have offered. And that vagueness does little to shed light on how Obama may approach Syria in the coming months and how Romney would behave if elected this fall.

Both Obama and Romney have called for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and clear the way for a political transition. Mindful of the war-weary American public, neither candidate supports direct U.S. military engagement in Syria. And both agree on the need to pressure Russia, which holds veto power on the U.N. Security Council, to end its support of Assad's regime, though Romney argues that Obama hasn't been tough enough with Moscow.

Romney, however, has called on the U.S. and its partners to "arm the opposition so they can defend themselves." But he has offered little sense of what he would do if the ensuing battles didn't push Assad from power or, if they did, what type of political transition he would support.

Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Romney is unlikely to articulate a fuller vision for Syria before the election because he doesn't want to own the problem before he needs to.

"His instinct is not to define a view," Alterman said. "His instinct is to attack the status quo without really presenting a coherent alternative."

The matter is further complicated for Romney by a lack of consensus within his own party over how to handle the crisis. A handful of hard-line voices in the Republican Party, led by Romney backer and Arizona Sen. John McCain, have called for U.S. airstrikes in Syria similar to the campaign the Obama administration waged successfully with NATO partners in Libya to push Moammar Gadhafi from power. But that effort has gained little traction, with other Republican lawmakers wary of leading the U.S. into another war after a decade in Iraq and Afghanistan.

McCain ramped up his criticism of the Obama administration's handling of the crisis Thursday. During a trip to Malaysia, he said it was "embarrassing that the United States of America refuses to show leadership and come to the aid of the Syrian people."

The White House opposes sending arms to the opposition, saying further militarization in Syria would only lead to more chaos. The administration also says there isn't enough clear information about the makeup of the opposition or assurances that the weapons wouldn't end up in the hands of al-Qaida, Hezbollah or other terrorist organizations.

Instead, the White House is hoping a steady stream of economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure can weaken Assad's grip on power. While administration officials say they are discussing with allies potential next steps for dealing with Syria, the lack of any publicly defined specific options under consideration has opened the president up to criticism.

"At some point you need to come up with a policy to make Assad step down or acknowledge that you're not going to do it," said Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.

For Obama, military engagement with Syria may not be feasible from either a policy and political perspective. Syria, unlike Libya, has greater defense capabilities, and administration officials doubt a bombing campaign could be accomplished quickly and relatively bloodlessly. Engaging U.S. forces in Syria would also run counter to Obama's foreign policy campaign narrative, which is built on being the president who ends wars, with the Iraq conflict coming to a close under his watch and the Afghanistan campaign winding down.

The violence in Syria has spiraled out of control as the uprising against Assad that began in March 2011 has morphed into an armed insurgency. An estimated 13,000 people have died so far.

Everywhere they look, teenagers are bombarded with pictures and images of celebrities, actors, actresses, and singers who weigh very little and flaunt their thin bodies in very little clothing. Fashion models who showcase the looks teenagers want to wear are very skinny and are only seen in the smallest sizes available. This causes children to search for weight loss plans for teens.

Walk into any clothing store targeting the younger generation or teenagers and this phenomenon is very obvious. Pictures of models wearing name brand clothing cover the walls. And these models are extremely skinny and wearing size 0 jeans and tops. Of course teenagers want to emulate these pictures and dress accordingly. Clothing companies continue to manufacture tiny sizes and often do not even carry sizes large enough for normal sized teenagers to wear.

Teenagers who read magazines and watch television or movies also see images and pictures of skinny people their own age who look cool. Everywhere they look, they see other thin teenagers and want to be that way as well. Then, they look for weight loss plans for teens.

Teenagers look for these weight loss plans online or in magazines or books. The problem is that not all of these weight loss plans are healthy or right for their body types. Teenagers often do not understand the need for a healthy diet or regular exercise. Teenagers usually look for a plan that promises quick success at losing weight. However, these plans that promise teenagers that they will lose weight quickly can often be dangerous to their health.

Teenagers have to be careful when looking at these weight loss plans and evaluate them carefully. No teenager should ever start a weight loss program without consulting his or her parents and doctor. Teenagers? bodies are still growing and developing, so their needs are different from the needs of adults. Teenagers should not be following an adult weight loss program unless they are under a doctor?s supervision.

Weight loss plans for teens are not the same as weight loss programs for children or adults. The first step in any teen weight loss program should be to consult a physician. A doctor will evaluate an individual teenager?s body and assess the body accordingly. A doctor will be able to prescribe a healthy weight loss program that will ensure teens get needed vitamins and nutrients. A doctor will help ensure teens get the necessary exercise to help maintain healthy weights.

It is no wonder that teenagers today want to lose weight. They are bombarded with pictures that tell them they should look a certain way. However, a teenager?s overall health is more important than just losing weight. If teenagers want to lose weight in a healthy positive way, they should seek the help of their doctors and parents.

Iran, other Mideast states hit by computer virus

LONDON (AP) ? Iran and other Middle East countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cellphones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. And suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.

"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.

Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the attack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.

"There have been tool like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.

Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."

Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.

Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.

He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.

"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.

Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."

Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.

As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."

Iraq opens 4th energy bidding round since 2003 war

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq opened on Wednesday its fourth post-war bidding round for oil and natural gas exploration, with 39 foreign energy companies registered to compete for exploration rights in a dozen areas of the country.

The government is seeking foreign investment to build up an energy sector hit by years of neglect and violence. Iraq holds the world's fourth largest oil reserves and oil revenues make up nearly 95 percent of the country's budget.

In an opening speech, Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul-Karim Elaibi said exploration of the areas up for bidding will increase Iraq's oil reserves and help the country enter the natural gas industry. He promised that his ministry will "spare no efforts to help and support the companies as partners to achieve the common interests."

Still, conditions for bidders are less attractive than in the three previous rounds held since the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

Only areas with undetermined hydrocarbon resources are on offer, while previously the rights to known big and medium oil and gas fields were being auctioned off. Operating costs for energy companies could be high because most of the 12 exploration blocks are in remote and unsafe areas and lack infrastructure.

The government also added a clause for the first time that prevents companies from signing deals with regional authorities without the approval of the central government in Baghdad. Companies that violate the clause will have their contracts terminated, said Sabah al-Saidi, the deputy head of the Oil Ministry's Licensing and Petroleum Contracts department.

The new clause came in response to Exxon Mobil's bold move last year to sign six deals with Iraq's northern self-ruled Kurdish region without Baghdad's approval. The amount of radioactive material that leaked into the environment from the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors in the five days following the March 11 disaster is estimated at 900,000 terabecquerels, 1.2 to 1.9 times the estimates released by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency in February, TEPCO said.

TEPCO's estimates covered the period from March 12 to March 31. Radioactive emissions after the beginning of April were considered less than 1 percent of those in March and were not included in the latest estimates, the utility said.

We have a choice to let those things impact us positively or negatively.} ?Well I have my fair share of character flaws, so I went along with society and blamed my mother. ?Surely she's the reason for my irrational temper, unreasonable expectations {of myself and others}, and intense perfectionism.?Sure, I'll blame the mother who every morning prepared me breakfast before going to school, who read a devotion to me while I ate, would bring forgotten school assignments to me in class, who drove me all around town for a thousand activities, who took side decorating jobs and substitute teaching to pay for my thousand activities, and who took a job as a full time teacher when I graduated high school just so she could buy me a newer car to take to off to college that my dad didn't think was necessary.? I suppose it was easier to focus on a few bad things then the endless good things, and of course it's always easier to blame someone.? However, God, even after I yelled and cursed at Him, allowed me the opportunity to reconcile that relationship. I will never be able to grasp how lucky I am that I did not loose my mom before I could begin a good relationship with her. ?{Mom is still here in this world - she will be about 40 minutes down the road from our new house, and I can't wait to enlist her help in landscaping and DIY adventures!}

UN observers in Syria heading to region where government troops reportedly killed 50 civilians

GENEVA ? ?A spokesman for the United Nations' envoy to Syria says international monitors are heading to a region where activists say at least 50 people were killed by government troops.

Ahmad Fawzi told The Associated Press in an email Saturday that the observers are traveling to Houla "as we speak."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist group say troops used heavy weapons Friday to pound the area of Houla in the province of Homs.

The Syrian National Council opposition group says more than 110 people were killed by forces loyal to President Bashar Assad.

Fighting in Syria has continued despite the deployment of some 250 U.N. observers who have fanned out across the country to monitor a cease-fire brokered by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan.
