Trent University to Celebrate 45th Convocation

1774 graduates to be honoured in five ceremonies over three days, June 6, 7 and 8, 2012

During its 45th Convocation, Trent University will honour 1,774 members of the 2012 graduating class, over the course of five ceremonies on Wednesday, June 6; Thursday, June 7; and Friday, June 8 on Symons campus.

Dr. Steven E. Franklin, Trent?s seventh president and vice-chancellor, and Dr. Tom Jackson, the University?s tenth chancellor, will preside over the Convocation ceremonies.

Two ceremonies will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. On Friday, one ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. All ceremonies take place outdoors in the University Court of the Bata Library on the Symons Campus. Over 100 volunteers, mostly University employees and retirees, will be lending a hand at this year?s Convocation ceremonies.

Graduating in 2012 are 1,670 undergraduate, three diploma and 101 graduate students. Eleven Ph.D.s and 90 masters? degrees ? 56 in the arts and 34 in the sciences ? will be granted.

Students are graduating for the first time with degrees in Archaeology and in Ecological Restoration. The first master?s degree in Sustainability Studies will be awarded within the largest class of graduate-level graduates in Trent?s history. All three diplomas granted will be in Foundations of Indigenous Learning.

Also during the ceremonies, the Governor General?s Gold Medal will be presented to the graduate student with the highest standing and the Silver Medal will be presented to the undergraduate student with the highest standing. In addition, four Symons Medals and two Bagnani Medals will be presented to undergraduate students who have achieved high academic standing in their programs. The President?s Medal will be awarded to two outstanding graduate students. During the ceremonies, five distinguished Canadians will receive honorary degrees.

Statistics from the Office of the Registrar for undergraduate studies show that 69 per cent of graduates are female, while 31 per cent are male. At the graduate level, 61 per cent of graduates are female and 39 per cent are male.

Undergraduate students graduating with a cumulative average of at least 80 per cent are named to the president?s honour roll. This year, 22 per cent of graduates are on the president?s honour roll.

A detailed breakdown of each convocation ceremony is as follows:

On Wednesday, June 6 at 10 a.m. degrees will be conferred upon all graduates in the following programs: Ancient History & Classics; Canadian Studies; Cultural Studies; English Literature; Gender & Women?s Studies; History; Modern Languages and Literatures: French, German & Hispanic Studies; Philosophy; and all degrees for Trent University Oshawa. An honorary degree will be conferred upon Dr. Gwynne Dyer, who will address convocation. Also at this ceremony, Professors Emeriti Leonard Conolly, John Fekete, Michael Neumann, Ian Storey and Graham Taylorwill be recognized.

On Wednesday, June 6 at 3 p.m. degrees will be conferred upon graduates in Business Administration and the School of Education & Professional Learning. An honorary degree will be conferred upon Ms. Sheila Fraser, who will address convocation. Professor Deborah Berrill will be presented with an Eminent Service Award and recognized as Professor Emeritus.

On Thursday, June 7 at 10 a.m. Degrees will be conferred upon graduates in the following programs: Anthropology; Ecological Restoration; Economics; Environmental and Resource Science/Studies; Globalization: Communities and Identities; Indigenous Studies; Indigenous Environmental Studies; International Development Studies; International Political Economy; Politics; Archaeology; and Sociology. Diplomas will be granted in Foundations in Indigenous Learning. An honorary degree will be conferred upon Dr. Ralph Heintzman, who will address convocation. Also at this ceremony, Professor Tom Hutchinson will be presented with the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Jacqueline Solway will be presented with the Distinguished Research Award.

On Thursday, June 7 at 3 p.m. Degrees will be conferred on all graduates in the following programs: Forensic Science; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Biology; Chemistry; Chemical Physics; Computer Science/Studies; Computing and Information Systems; Computing Systems and Physics; Environmental Chemistry; Geography; Mathematics; Mathematical Computer Science; Mathematical Economics; Mathematical Physics; Physics & Astronomy; and Psychology. An honorary degree will be conferred upon Mr. Mark Starowicz, who will address convocation. An Eminent Service award will be presented to Mr. John Breukelaar.

On Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m. Graduate Degrees will be conferred upon Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts and Master of Science graduates. Graduates from the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing will also receive their degrees. An honorary degree will be conferred upon Dr. Judith Shamian, who will address convocation.

Green Initiatives

For the fourth year, several green initiatives designed to reduce the event?s impact on the environment will be part of Trent?s Convocation ceremonies, including:

Water Bottle-Free Convocation
By eliminating the use of commercial bottled water at the ceremonies, Trent will reduce the negative environmental and social impacts of 5,000 single-use water bottles, which have been consumed at previous ceremonies. In lieu of bottled water, the University will set up a water station at an information table to provide tap water in biodegradable cups to all guests of Convocation. Graduates will each receive a take-home gift of a stainless steel water bottle which will be filled with tap water for their use during the outdoor ceremonies.

Free Passes for Peterborough Transit
In addition to the bottle-water free initiative, graduates and their families are being actively encouraged to reduce emissions by travelling, free of charge, on Peterborough Transit to and from the ceremonies. This option will also benefit guests by alleviating parking concerns on campus.

"So You Think You Can Dance" is back!

Our hearts did a series of grande j?t?s in anticipation of Thursday night's return of Cat Deeley, Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and all of their partners in judgment.

We have some concerns, of course: Every show gets a little old by its ninth season. And what's with this once-a-week thing?

But we just have to trust that our old pal Nigel knows what he's doing, and give ourselves over to the art of the dance...

First up, "SYTYCD" hit New York City--and just as eventual winner Melanie was the first hopeful we laid eyes on last season, we expect big things from Amelia Lowe.

The 18-year-old was first out of the gate and, what with that Louise Brooks bob and the retro French music to which she danced so beautifully, was immediately pegged as one to watch.

Another standout was contemporary dancer Leo Reyes, 21, who admitted to pissing away his talent until his mother attempted suicide. Happily, she's healthy now, and Leo wants to achieve big things in her honor.

Well, he's come to the right place.

Then there was the single mother of two (whose baby stole the show, crawling around on the stage to an Evanescence song) and Hampton "The Exorcist" Williams, whose purpose was perhaps to exorcize the bad vibes left behind by the more clueless auditioners out there.

Mary cried and Lil C actually bowed down!

"How you'll get on in a dance competition like this show...I don't give a (expletive), I tell you!" Nigel said, offering up a ticket to Vegas.

Romney to propose voucher-like education overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Shifting from the economy to education, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was proposing a voucher-style system that could significantly alter the public school system and revive the debate over school choice.

Romney, who has been reluctant to stray far from the economic issues at the core of the presidential campaign, was outlining the proposal during a speech Wednesday at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

A Romney aide who previewed the speech for reporters said the candidate would let low-income and disabled students use federal funding to attend public schools, public charter schools and, in some cases, private schools. Federal funds could also be applied to tutors or digital courses.

The plan is line with GOP reforms aimed at giving students more educational choices. But it's unclear how schools in areas that depend on the federal funding would fare.

The proposal was not expected to include any new federal money for education.

Romney has so far offered few details for his plans on several key policy areas, including foreign policy, health care and education. He attacked Obama's education policy while speaking to donors in New York City on Tuesday evening, previewing themes likely to play prominently in Wednesday's speech.

"This president receives the lion's share of funding from organized labor, and the teachers' unions represent a massive source of funding for the Democratic Party," Romney said. "The challenge with that is when it comes to actual reform to make schools better for our kids, they talk a good game, but they don't do it."

He continued, "If I'm president of the United States, instead of just giving lip service to improving our schools, I will actually put the kids first and the union behind in giving our kids better teachers, better options and better choices for a better future."

The message is consistent for the Romney campaign, which regularly heaps criticism on the Democratic president's policies but offers only a vague road map for what Romney would do.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that Romney's shift to education was welcome after a campaign season in which he said the GOP rarely mentioned the issue.

"Education never came up in the Republican primary in any of the debates, or if it did, it came up almost never," Carney said.

Carney said Obama's education initiatives have received broad bipartisan support and that the president "looks forward to defending that record."

Romney's shift carries some risk. His regular criticism of labor unions, in particular, threatens to alienate voters in Rust Belt states like Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, where a close election may be decided.

Before the speech, Romney announced Tuesday a team of education policy advisers that includes former Education Secretary Rod Paige and other officials from President George W. Bush's administration. Paige is among several prominent opponents of teachers' unions on the panel. As education secretary in 2004, he labeled the National Education Association a "terrorist organization."

Romney's positions on education have evolved over time. He once supported abolishing the Education Department but reversed that position as a presidential candidate in 2007. At the time, he said he came to see the value of the federal government in "holding down the interests of the teachers' unions" and putting kids and parents first.

Romney also changed his position on the Bush-era education overhaul known as "No Child Left Behind." He said he supported the law as a candidate in 2007, but he has since generally come out against the policy many conservatives see as an expansion of the federal government.

Romney continues to support the federal accountability standards in the law, however. He also has said the student testing, charter-school incentives and teacher evaluation standards in Obama's "Race to the Top" competition "make sense," although the federal government should have less control over education. The campaign in recent days has emphasized his support for charter schools while governor of Massachusetts, a theme likely to play out in Wednesday's address.

The speech represents Romney's first public event in four days. Working to close Obama's cash advantage, he's coming off a three-day fundraising swing in the New York area that his chief finance aide said had netted $15 million. A single finance event in Manhattan on Tuesday evening generated $5 million.

Still, the campaign is eager to drive a positive message for voters now tuning in to the contest.

The education speech follows a relatively quiet phase for Romney, who has been focused on fundraising but usually delivers one major address a week. Most of his recent speeches, however, have been about the economic themes that so far have defined his campaign.

In a rare public admission of the covert cyber war against extremists, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says cyber experts based at the State Department hacked Yemeni tribal websites, replacing al-Qaida propaganda that bragged about killing Americans.

"Within 48 hours, our team plastered the same sites with altered versions of the ads that showed the toll al-Qaida attacks have taken on the Yemeni people," Clinton said Wednesday.

In response, "Extremists are publicly venting their frustration and asking supporters not to believe everything they read on the Internet," she said.

Clinton described the cyber effort as part of a larger, multipronged attack on terrorism that goes beyond attacks like the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden to include the propaganda battle, and the longer, slower campaign of diplomats working alongside special operations troops to shore up local governments and economies and train local forces.

Clinton was speaking alongside Adm. Bill McRaven, head of the U.S. Special Operations Command, at a conference of hundreds of U.S. and international special operations commanders ? the two senior leaders sending a tacit message to their sometimes warring tribes of troops and diplomats that they have to get along.

Yemen is considered both a model and a test case of that effort. U.S. diplomats have been working to stabilize the fledgling government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who replaced ousted Yemeni strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh stepped down in February as part of a U.S.-backed power-transfer deal brokered by Gulf Arab countries aimed at ending political unrest in the country after a yearlong uprising.

Hadi has faced the twin challenges of Saleh loyalists refusing to relinquish their government and military posts, and of al-Qaida attacks in the south, where the group has established a large safe haven from which to attack Yemeni troops.

The White House responded by issuing an executive order last week threatening sanctions against individuals who challenge Hadi's government. It also dispatched a new batch of special operations forces to train Yemen's army to help withstand al-Qaida attacks that have killed hundreds of Yemeni troops.

Yemen's al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, is considered one of al-Qaida's most dangerous offshoots.

Yemen was the launching pad for three foiled al-Qaida attacks on U.S. targets: the Christmas 2009 attempt to down an American airliner over Detroit with an underwear bomb and the sending of printer cartridges packed with explosives to Chicago-area synagogues in 2010. In the past month the CIA thwarted yet another plot by AQAP to destroy a U.S.-bound airliner using a bomb which could have been undetectable by conventional airport scanners.

Clinton says the cyber attack was launched by an interagency group of specialists, including diplomats, special operators and intelligence analysts, housed at the State Department. Called the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications, its experts patrol the Internet and social media to counter al-Qaida's attempts to recruit new followers.

"Together, they will work to pre-empt, discredit and outmaneuver extremist propaganda," Clinton said.

Offensive attacks on extremist sites are generally attributed to the Pentagon's U.S. Cyber Command, though seldom acknowledged publicly.
