Conservation renews portraits of founding fathers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sixteen paintings by American artist Gilbert Stuart of some of the nation's founding fathers and other figures are showing their true colors for the first time in decades through a major conservation project at the National Gallery of Art.

The project is restoring the original appearance of Stuart's portraits of people including presidents George Washington and John Adams. Gallery conservators have been painstakingly removing yellowed varnish from Stuart's paintings to reveal true flesh tones and clothing colors that had been hidden by a discolored old protective coating.

Conservators told The Associated Press the work may reveal some new discoveries about Stuart's work. His "Vaughan-Sinclair" portrait of the nation's first president from 1795 may actually be a more finished painting from an earlier time than originally thought. It will likely draw interest from Stuart researchers, they said.

In a portrait of Abigail Adams that took Stuart 15 years to complete, conservators believe they discovered traces of an original headdress that was changed later, perhaps to better match the changing fashions by the time the painting was completed in 1815.

"What's emerged now that time's varnish is gone is everything we knew to be true and more," said Nancy Anderson, a curator of American and British painting. "You get to see the virtuoso technique because nothing's obscuring it anymore."

The conservation project spans some of Stuart's earliest paintings to portraits he completed late in life as one of the most famous portraitist artists. The gallery holds 42 paintings by Stuart altogether. He is most famous for his paintings of Washington, particularly the full-length "Lansdowne" portrait of the president.

Stuart was born in Rhode Island in 1755 and trained with a Scottish portrait painter. At 19 during the start of the American Revolution, Stuart went to London and worked as an assistant to artist Benjamin West and later moved to Dublin to continue painting and perfecting his technique. He returned to the United States in 1793 with his sights set on painting Washington and making a name for himself.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Jay wrote a letter introducing Stuart to Washington to help the artist gain access to the president. Stuart had a list of subscribers clamoring for a depiction of the nation's most famous politician and military figure. Eventually, Washington agreed to sit for Stuart in Philadelphia.

Stuart painted three portraits while Washington was sitting. One bust-length portrait he supposedly didn't like and rubbed out ? but copied it several times before destroying it. One of Stuart's original copies is believed to be the "Vaughan-Sinclair" portrait that has been conserved, said portrait conservator Joanna Dunn.

She uses a mild solvent to remove the varnish with tiny cotton swabs to treat the paintings. Old restoration paint that no longer matches the original color also is removed. Damaged areas can be repaired with in-painting using a tiny brush filling in the losses of pigment to show the works as the artist intended. One of Stuart's paintings of his uncle, Capt. Joseph Anthony, has a severe tear Dunn is working to cover.

The most dramatic change as conservators demonstrate the process comes as the aged varnish is removed. The yellow layer has hidden Stuart's brushwork for decades since they came to the National Gallery of Art from private collections. The varnish also changes the color relationships in the paintings, making them look flatter.

"A painting is really like a trick of the eye," Dunn said. "It's a two-dimensional thing that's making it look three dimensional. So when you change those color relationships, you lose the depth of the painting."

Bright white collars have been restored, along with a glimmer of blue in John Adams' eyes and the details of Washington's face ? the pink in his cheeks and his five o'clock shadow.

"Prior to cleaning, he was quite jaundice," Anderson said. "Now beautifully fresh, and you can see the life in his cheeks, the blood beneath his skin instead of just the yellow varnish. He has just emerged transformed by the treatment."

The conservation treatment also indirectly extends the life of the paintings, Dunn said. If the varnish isn't removed soon enough, it may never come off. Conservators would reach a point where removing the varnish also would remove the paint. And when the paintings become too discolored, they are rarely shown to the public because they are less attractive.

Treatment of Stuart's portrait of Abigail Adams revealed the style of her head gear changed from the time he started the painting in 1800 to its completion in 1815. He started with a much larger bonnet but covered it up and replaced it with a more stylish headdress later.

Traces of the original bonnet were revealed beneath the varnish but were covered again with restoration paint as Stuart intended.

Abigail Adams grew impatient with Stuart, admonishing him in letters to complete their commissioned paintings. He had apparently moved on to other works and was in high demand.

"I just don't know what to make of this Mr. Stuart," she said at one point, Anderson recounted.

She persisted, though, to have the paintings completed because the Adams family apparently thought Stuart's skill in capturing the essence of personality was unmatched.

Six of the newly restored works will be unveiled to the public in October in a new exhibit, "Masterpieces of American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection," pairing art from the period with furniture. Other Stuart portraits, including his depiction of the first five presidents, already are on display in the permanent collection.

A grant from Bank of America funded the restoration project, speeding the work by years by providing funds to hire two outside conservators to work at the gallery. The bank began funding conservation projects in recent years since the economic downturn after seeing a need that was largely unfunded. It is committing $2 million a year to provide grants to museums for such conservation projects, and the National Gallery of Art is among its largest grants, said Allen Blevins, a senior vice president in charge of heritage and arts programs.

The bank wanted to fund projects that would make such works more accessible to the public, Blevins said, and "this is going to allow them to loan more Gilbert Stuart portraits to museums around the country."

Islamists smash Timbuktu relics, plant mines in north Mali

Islamist rebels smashed the entrance of a 15th-century Timbuktu mosque on Monday, while their Al-Qaeda allies in northern Mali cut off the key city of Gao by planting landmines all around it.

In Timbuktu, the Al-Qaeda-allied Islamist group Ansar Dine (Defenders of Faith) continued their destruction of the city's cultural treasures, defying a chorus of international condemnation.

Some residents sobbed as the Islamists broke down what they call the 'sacred door' of one of Timbuktu's three ancient mosques, Sidi Yahya -- closed for centuries due to local beliefs that to open it will bring misfortune.

In Gao meanwhile, two sources said Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and its allies had planted mines around the city, with one Tuareg rebel spokesman accusing them of taking the city hostage.

Mossa Ag Attaher, spokesman for a Tuareg rebel National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), which until recently shared control of Gao with the Islamists, said the Islamists had "mined the area surrounding Gao".

AQIM, he said, was "using the population as hostages, as a human shield to protect itself from an MNLA counter-attack", he added.

The North African Al-Qaeda franchise and their offshoot Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) forced their former MNLA allies out of the city in deadly clashes last week.

"Many people are trying to escape, to take the bus to go to Bamako, but the Islamists are stopping them," said Attaher, the MNLA's Paris-based spokesman.

A west African source also confirmed that landmines had been planted around Gao "to prevent a possible attack by troops" from the west African regional bloc ECOWAS as well as a possible counter-offensive from the Tuareg fighters.

In Timbuktu, the jihadists of Ansar Dine, who occupied Mali's vast north three months ago destroyed seven tombs of ancient Muslim saints over the weekend which they consider idolatrous.

A spokesman said they were acting in the name of God and would "destroy every mausoleum in the city. All of them, without exception".

Exclusive video footage obtained by AFP shows turbaned men chanting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is great) while smashing a mausoleum with pick-axes in a cloud of dust, the mud-brick tomb showing gaping holes in the side with rubble piling up alongside it.

They continued their work Monday at the 15th century Sidi Yahya mosque.

A former tour guide in the once-popular tourist destination said: "They came with pick-axes, they cried 'Allah' and broke the door. It is very serious. Some of the people watching began crying."

Another man, a relative of a local imam (religious leader), said he had spoken to members of Ansar Dine and "they wanted to show that it is not the end of the world" when the door is opened.

According to the website of the UN cultural agency (UNESCO) Sidi Yahya is one of Timbuktu's three great mosques and was built around 1400, dating back to the city's golden age as a desert crossroads and centre for learning.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation condemned the destruction, saying in a statement the sites were "part of the rich Islamic heritage of Mali and should not be allowed to be destroyed by ... bigoted extremist elements."

The fabled city, which became a metaphor for a mythic, faraway place, is considered one of the centres from which Islam spread through Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Ansar Dine began their campaign of destruction after UNESCO put Timbuktu on its list of endangered world heritage sites.

Pleas have poured in for the Islamists to halt the destruction, reminiscent of the Taliban blowing up the giant Buddhas of the Bamiyan valley in Afghanistan -- an ancient Buddhist shrine on the Silk Road -- in 2001 after branding them un-Islamic.

International Criminal Court prosecutor Fatou Bensouda on Sunday told AFP that those destroying the religious building could face prosecution.

"This is a war crime which my office has authority to fully investigate."

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon deplored the destruction of tombs, with his spokesman Martin Nesirky quoting him as saying: "Such attacks against cultural heritage sites are totally unjustified."

In a matter of months Mali has gone from one of west Africa's stable democracies to a nation gripped by deadly chaos.

A March 22 coup eased the way for Tuareg separatist rebels -- descendants of those who founded Timbuktu in the fifth century -- to seize an area larger than France, which they consider their homeland.

However the previously unknown Ansar Dine group, fighting on their flanks seized the upper hand. Openly allied with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, they have since pushed the Tuareg rebels from all positions of power.

The international community fears the vast desert area will become a new haven for terrorist activity and the Islamists have threatened any country that joins a possible military intervention force in Mali.

Iran: We will 'confront' new EU oil sanctions

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has stored up imported goods and hard currency for a "battle" against EU sanctions targeting the country's vital oil sector that went into effect Sunday, officials said. They acknowledged though that the measures, which aim at pressuring the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program, may cause economic disruptions.

Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi said the country has stockpiled necessities to reduce the impact of the embargo hitting the oil and banking sectors.

"Today, we are facing the heaviest of sanctions and we ask people to help officials in this battle," Rahimi was quoted by state television's website as saying at a religious conference. He said the "dastardly sanctions" might cause "occasional confusion" in the market, but that the Iranian nation would not be stopped.

Central bank governor Mahmoud Bahmani also told the semiofficial Mehr news agency that Iran has "plans" to deal with the embargo and enough hard currency to meet its import needs.

The EU said earlier this week that all contracts for importing Iranian oil will have to be terminated from Sunday. Also, European companies will no longer be involved in insuring Iranian oil.

The measures come on top of previous sanctions levied by the U.S. and the West that have already hit Iran's economy. U.S. officials say the American sanctions have cut exports of Iranian crude from about 2.5 million barrels a day last year to between 1.2 and 1.8 million barrels now.

"We have not remained passive. To confront the sanctions, we have plans in progress," said Bahmani. He did not elaborate on the plans.

Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Ghasemi meanwhile ordered his staff to "mobilize" against "illegal sanctions," Mehr said. It did not say what the measures were.

Late Saturday Ghasemi told state television that Iran has weathered previous rounds of sanctions. "I do not see it as a problem that enemies have imposed an embargo today," he said. "They have imposed similar sanctions years ago, and nothing happened."

He said Iran has already stopped selling oil to many EU countries and sold to others instead. "Developing countries and countries with fast economic growth have no alternative to oil. Fortunately, because of the quality of our country's oil, all are interest in using it."

Mehr published its own analysis listing measures that Iran could take to counter the sanctions, including shutting the vital Strait of Hormuz off its southern coast that handles a fifth of the world's oil supply ? a threat that has repeatedly been made by Iranian officials in the past. The semiofficial news agency's editorials sometimes reflect views held by top Iranian officials who do not wish to state them publically.

On Sunday, however, Iran's Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi made statements to the official IRNA news agency about the Strait in which he did not mention any plans to close it ? remarks that suggest that Iran is playing down the threat in dealings with the West.

Vahidi said Iran is the main protector of the waterway, and that Tehran "has confronted anybody who tried to endanger the Strait."

Mehr also suggested that Iran could make use of hard currencies other than the U.S. dollar and the euro, form its own insurance syndicate to replace foreign companies that withdraw from the market, store up oil in tanks for later sale so as not to cut production, or simply reduce oil production to save its reserves for the future.

The U.S. and EU measures are intended to pressure Iran over fears that it is developing nuclear weapons.

Iran denies the charges, saying its nuclear program is aimed at peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.
