97% Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

"Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" is an insightful, engaging and inspiring documentary about the activist and famed artist. That having been said, I am sure there are some people who might find it strange that I use the word inspiring for an artist who makes his art from smashing antique vases and pointing his middle finger at landmarks, especially Tiananmen Square.(By the way, does anybody know if there are any photos of his middle finger in front of Yankee Stadium?) I think both are symbolic of how nothing is sacred, especially the Chinese government who he is in a running battle with to gain transparency into the inner workings of its bureaucracy. After they shut down his blog, he went on Twitter and distributed his documentaries for free over the internet. His style is definitely confrontational, as somebody says he reminds him of a hooligan, but in a good way.(As Ani DiFranco once sang, being nice is overrated.) Remember, we are all hooligans, right now. Ai Weiwei's activism hit a critical point when he criticized the treatment of the poor during the 2008 Olympics and the response to the Sichuan earthquake which killed several thousand children in faulty construction that has been compared to tofu. As New Yorker magazine correspondent Evan Osnos points out, Ai Weiwei was initially inspired politically by the Iran Contra hearings when he was living in the United States that sought to hold a government responsible but did not work as well as some of us would have liked. So, instead of the fortune his son would inherit, he will have something much more precious to leave him. Now, if I can only figure out if the cat opening the door is supposed to be a metaphor or just darn cute.

5 Reasons Why 2012 is a Good Time to Buy a Franchise

Haven?t you at least at one point of your life dreamt about starting your own business, being your own boss, and building up your utterly successful company from scratch? In fact, most business orientated people play with the idea of buying into a franchise. Franchises offer an ideal business model as you work for yourself, BUT not by yourself!

Buying into a recognized brand will give your business a head start. So you can skip the difficult and lengthy time of building up a trusted brand and jump straight into the lucrative franchise business. Obviously, starting up your own business sounds really attractive and exciting, but experienced entrepreneurs know just too well how hard it can be to run a business without a supporting network. However, don?t take it too easy on running a franchise as it still requires a great deal of business acumen, patience and determination. The bright side is though that you?re are being part of something bigger, and often, better.

Hence, why is 2012 the best time to buy a franchise? Here are 5 powerful reasons:

1. It?s a Buyer?s Market

Franchisors will do anything to keep their business competitive for customers and hitting the growth targets. Therefore, they will make the franchising opportunity as affordable and attractive as it can be, in order to get people involved. Some reduce the initial cost of purchase, or offer specific on going incentives, such as refunds on the first year?s advertising/ reduction in operating cost and fees. And as you read the title before ? the franchise market is and will be a buyer?s market.

2. Personal Future

The economy is currently on the rise again, but people still moan and complain about their job insecurity.? As you can see though, this factor is very important at all levels of the career ladder. However you will also see that many mid-level managers will struggle to keep their position in the long term as the competition is really high.

So if you have the actual ?guts? and skills required, why don?t you focus on securing your on future and creating your own job security. Many people use their redundancy money or team up with ex-colleagues to buy a franchise. Hence, what better way to choose a business partner than by picking somebody you have worked with? BUT watch out ? just people you can entirely trust and work with, because you don?t want to get into stupid misunderstandings or disputes mid-way.

3. Properties on Sale

You might have experienced or seen the huge problems with open properties. Several years ago landlords never struggled to fill the properties, but the last few years have been hard for them.? Empty places, which results automatically in low or no return of investment at all. Hence, commercial property owners are much easier to negotiate and willing to take on lower paying tenants. In the end it is a buyer?s market and franchise owners have the best pick of the bunch, when it comes to choosing a business premises.

4. Raising funds much easier

The government is focused on boosting the economy and creating jobs by encouraging banks to provide funding for the people, who are willing to ?make a move? and help start rolling the economy. Moreover, franchising is widely considered to be the safer option than starting a business from scratch as for instance the bank will be by far easier to offer a loan to you.

Certainly you will be expected to have a slight understanding of your industry and market, but banks will be far happier to support you with a loan for a trusted or well-known franchise than a new brand / business concept.

5. Huge pool of talents

Recession has hit hard on the job sector the last few years and this was one of the reasons why highly qualified employees had to be fired during this period. However, there is a great pool of talents out there, who want to get back to work as soon as possible. This will result in a decrease of cost and time on managing recruitment campaigns for you. Moreover, it will be easier for you to find the right people for the right job.

Polls favor Obama. A conspiracy by Democrats and the media? (+video)

More voters consider themselves Democrats rather than Republicans, and this is reflected in opinion polls showing Barack Obama ahead of Mitt Romney. Critics say the results are skewed.

Recent polling ? especially in key battleground states ? shows President Barack Obama with a widening lead over challenger Mitt Romney. It?s dispiriting to Republican leaders, and it would seem to put more wind into the Obama campaign?s sails headed into next week?s first presidential debate.

But among conservative commentators and some in the GOP, that just proves one thing: That the polls are rigged to give Democrats an apparent advantage, and that the mainstream media is buying into what amounts to a conspiracy by playing up such survey results.

?They're trying to wrap this up before the debates even start,? Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show this week. ?I think they're trying to get this election finished and in the can by suppressing your vote and depressing you so that you just don't think there's any reason to vote, that it's hopeless.?

Why do Election 2012 swing states matter? 5 resources to explain.

The essence of the complaint is that pollsters are basing their reports on too many Democrats having been surveyed ? that when results showing Obama ahead by 6-8 points are properly weighted by party affiliation, the race is dead-even with Romney actually ahead in some places.

The response from professional pollsters is that any difference in the party balance of those surveyed is a reflection of how voters identify themselves today: 35 percent Democrats, 28 percent Republicans, and 33 percent Independents.

As both campaigns know, it?s also a fluid situation with how voters identify their party leanings right now more important than how they last registered. It?s why both campaigns are angling for cross-over voters and especially Independents. If Obama and Romney were to get everybody who identifies with their party plus half the Independents, Obama ? today, at least ? would win by 7 points.

?Party identification changes as political tides change,? Frank Newport, Gallup?s editor-in-chief, wrote this week in his response to the controversy.??General shifts in the political environment can affect party identification just as they can affect presidential job approval and results of the ?Who are you going to vote for?? question.?

Gallup puts its question to voters agreeing to be surveyed this way:??In politics, as of today, do you consider yourself a Republican, a Democrat, or an independent??
?
?Note that this question does not ask, ?What was your party identification in November 2008?? Nor does it ask, ?Are you registered with one party or the other in your state??? says Mr. Newport. ?Our question uses the words ?as of today? and ?consider.? It is designed to measure fluidity in political?self-identification.??

The key thing for campaigns and those reporting on them is too look at the bigger picture over time. Today?s snapshot ? and this includes polls by the relatively conservative Fox News and Rasmussen Reports ? shows Obama ahead during this period between the party conventions and the debates.

"If I don't focus on an individual poll here or there and look at the dynamic of the race, and the broad array of polls, it tells me that the president has a significant lead at this point," Stuart Rothenberg, publisher of the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report,?told Reuters.

A related conservative complaint is that reporters and editors can become too obsessive about opinion polls.

?This produces headlines and TV coverage that seem intentionally designed to demoralize Republicans and persuade undecided ?swing? voters ? who have a tendency to vote for the candidate they perceive as the likely winner ? to support Obama,? writes Robert Stacy McCain at the American Spectator. ?That such poll-driven coverage could function as a self-fulfilling prophecy ? in fact creating?the result it pretends to?predict ? is an increasing worry for conservatives.?

Not all conservatives are beating up on poll-takers and the media over the string of voter surveys showing Romney trailing in the race.

?I?ve been in politics long enough to know that the louder one side gets complaining about the polls, the more likely it is that this is the side that, in reality, actually is losing,? Erick Erickson, editor of the RedState blog, wrote this week.

?The reality is that Mitt Romney is behind, but that does not mean this thing is over,? Mr. Erickson writes. ?It is close and Romney can very much still win this election.?

Maggot guts help police identify body

Police in Mexico recently discovered a body burned beyond recognition in a remote patch of woods just off a country road. The hands and feet were missing. There was no physical evidence nearby except a school graduation ring. The body was in such bad shape that investigators couldn't even determine the gender. The only soft tissue available for genetic analysis was a burned fragment of liver, but attempts to get a DNA profile from this bit of evidence proved futile.

However, forensic investigators were able to find useful genetic material in an unusual place ? inside the guts of the maggots infesting the corpse's neck and face.

"This is the first reported case of analysis of human DNA isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of maggots used to identify a victim in a criminal case," a group of researchers from Monterrey, Mexico, wrote in a report this month in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

    4. China volcano shows signs of unrest

Ten days before the body was found, a man claimed his daughter had been abducted. He recognized the ring, but couldn't tell if the badly burned corpse was his daughter. The investigators took a DNA sample from the man and then looked at the gut contents of three blowfly maggots from the dead body. They found traces of human DNA in the bugs' stomachs. With this evidence, they found that the victim was female, and they were able to run a paternity test, which came back with a 99.68-percent match to the man, confirming that this was his abducted daughter.

Maggots are commonly used to construct timelines for crimes, as larval development can indicate how long a victim has been dead. Attracted by gases escaping from a decomposing corpse, blowflies often show up within minutes of death, infesting parts of the body and laying their eggs there. It's the larvae that result from these eggs that serve as a timestamp; depending on the temperature they develop from egg to winged adult in a matter of 10 or so days.

But the researchers say this grim case shows how else the insects might be used as clues.

"If maggots are encountered in association with human remains, investigators could utilize this approach if the extraction of DNA from other sources is not possible," wrote the researchers, led by Marta Ortega-Mart?nez, of Universidad Aut?noma de Nuevo Le?n.

Samsung Galaxy Note II variants for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon possibly caught at the FCC

Samsung Galaxy Note II variants for AT&T, TMobile, Verizon possibly caught at the FCC

It's no secret that Samsung plans to bring the Galaxy Note II to many US carriers by mid-fall. Even so, getting there requires the FCC's blessing -- which makes us glad to see the regulator approve what might be three carriers' variants of the giant Android phone. The SGH-i317 looks to be the model for AT&T and Canadian carriers, having been greenlit for their key 3G and 4G bands while lining up with a briefly available benchmark of the device sharing the Note II's HD screen and use of Jelly Bean. The SCH-i605? Based on its inclusions of both CDMA and GSM, a lone 700MHz LTE band and a past screen capture leak, it's a dual-mode Note II destined for Verizon. As for the SGH-T889, it's even more conspicuous beyond what we've already seen: the T889's HSPA includes the 1,700MHz AWS frequency that T-Mobile will still call home for a long while. LTE likewise exists on the 1,700MHz and roaming-friendly 700MHz bands in possible instances of futureproofing. While we rarely want to say a mobile device is confirmed until we see it first-hand, the convenient timing and natures of the three FCC approvals only help to fuel suspicions that Samsung's pen-focused event on October 24th is all about the Note II's American launch.

Report: Federal agencies behind in paying taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The IRS needs to take a closer look at the federal government in its search for tax scofflaws.

That's right ? a Treasury Department watchdog office said Thursday that 70 federal agencies owed about $14 million in unpaid taxes at the end of last year.

Federal agencies are exempt from paying federal income taxes, but they are responsible for turning over employment taxes, mainly Social Security and Medicare taxes, that their employees must pay.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said 40 of these delinquent tax accounts totaling about $2.6 million were still open three years after being identified, and in 80 percent of those cases, the investigations had been suspended. The offending agencies were not identified.

The $14 million isn't a lot compared to the $768 billion in employment taxes the IRS collected in 2011.

But Inspector General J. Russell George stressed that "federal agencies must comply with the same filing and paying standards that apply to all American taxpayers."

Cracking down on delinquents is complicated by IRS policies that do not allow enforcement actions against federal agencies and restrictions against penalizing or imposing interest on agencies that are behind in making their payments.

Another problem is that federal law generally allows agencies to pay their current-year taxes only with current-year funds, making it difficult to come up with the money to pay for past-year delinquencies.

The IRS, in a statement, said it was committed to the timely collection of employment taxes and that the amount of delinquent taxes had dropped from $406 million in 2005 to $14 million last year, a small fraction of tax deposits made by federal agencies.

The agency said that last year agencies made more than $90 billion in employment tax deposits.

The report was a follow-up to a 2007 study that found the IRS needed to better identify and address the causes for federal agency delinquencies. It did find that an office in the IRS set up to pursue federal agency delinquencies in the 2008-2011 period had been able to resolve cases involving nearly $197 million in delinquent taxes owed and closed out 2,900 instances of delinquent tax returns.

But it said the tax agency needed to do more, including developing a process to send formal letters to non-paying federal agencies and pursuing regulatory or legislative options that would allow the IRS to collect taxes from agencies that have not fulfilled their tax obligations. The report said the IRS had agreed with these recommendations.

LONDON (AP) ? One Direction's latest single sums it up.

"Live While We're Young" is the first track off their second album, and the guys are happy to have it as a motto.

The five-member British pop group has been in the limelight since its debut album, "Up All Night," became a No. 1 worldwide smash earlier this year.

Where they go and with whom is heavily reported on, but they don't take anything too seriously.

Louis Tomlinson says: "If we go out on a night out and we're a little bit drunk, it's not obviously going to be a great picture, but it's not too bad. The fact is we're young; everyone who is our age is going out anyway."

"Live While We're Young" is out in the U.K. on Sept. 30.

(AP) ? Cuba's signature industry is showing signs of life two years after the worst harvest in more than a century.

Hulking processing plants are coming back online and production is rising, a boon to rural towns like Jaronu where producing sugar has been a way of life for generations.

Officials recently said that the harvest is expected to increase by 20 percent in the coming season after jumps of 7 percent and 16 percent in the last two harvests.

At the Brasil refinery in the steamy central province of Camaguey, a $6 million makeover is under way. During a recent visit, bulldozers were busy re-grading the floor, operators were laying foundations for new machinery and workers buzzed about, hammering and welding amid a deafening mechanic roar and a pervasive oily odor.

"I've never seen as much money being spent here as there is now," said Alodia Campo, a 54-year-old plant engineer and among the few employees still remaining from the Brasil's glory days.

With world market prices rebounding, sugar is suddenly more profitable, and a radical reorganization of the sector could offer a blueprint for how to lift the rest of the island's inefficient command economy.

"The Cuban sugar industry is tied to the culture, history and identity of this country," said Liobel Perez, spokesman for Azcuba, the largely autonomous state-run company that replaced the Sugar Ministry in late 2011. "Sugarcane will not define Cuba's future, but it will have to be a part of it."

Just two years ago, the sugar industry was on its knees.

The sugar minister had been sacked. State-run newspapers lambasted rampant inefficiency and thousands of workers were moved to other sectors. Eventually, the powerful Sugar Ministry itself was eliminated.

Even with the current reorganization, sugar revenues are far outpaced by sectors such as tourism and nickel mining.

Last year, sugar earnings were $333 million, while nickel brought in $1.25 billion, according to a study compiled by Rafael Romeu, a U.S.-based economist and former president of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy. Tourism brought in $2.5 billion in revenue in 2011, according to government figures.

President Raul Castro created Azcuba as part of his effort to stimulate the farm sector and streamline a fossilized Marxist economy that even he says doesn't work anymore.

Unlike virtually every other part of the state-dominated economy, Azcuba gets to keep 65 percent of its revenues and make decisions about reinvesting without having to ask permission from the central government.

At the Brasil refinery, the mammoth rust-covered sheds installed by American Sugar Refining Co., which launched the plant in 1921, still stand. Although surrounded by the twisted carcasses of machinery ripped out of the structures, the Brasil is expected to be ready for the upcoming annual harvest and start milling cane by February.

That would have seemed an unlikely prospect during most of the last decade. The plant mostly sat idle or was intermittently used as a grain depot, with only 50 employees remaining from a workforce that once numbered 500.

The refinery came back online briefly in 2008, only to be shuttered after two years because it was so inefficient.

The Brasil's near-demise mirrors sugar's decline from the times when it accounted for 80 percent of Cuba's export income, principally from the nearby U.S. market before relations between the two countries soured in the 1960s.

The crop fueled Cuba's rum industry and permeated popular culture. Iconic singer Celia Cruz was famed for interjecting cries of "Azucar!" ("sugar") in her songs.

Over the decades since Cuba's 1959 revolution, bureaucratic mismanagement created a slow-growing crisis that exploded in 2002, said Arturo Lopez-Levy, a Cuban economist at the University of Denver. At that time, sugar sold for just 6 cents a pound on world markets.

Cuban officials mothballed much of the industry, shuttering 100 of the island's 156 refineries and converting some 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares) of cane fields to other crops.

Production plummeted. From a peak of approximately 8 million tons in 1989, sugar output hit a 105-year-low of 1.1 million in 2010.

It was a black eye for a country where Fidel Castro once sent brigades of soldiers, students, homemakers and bureaucrats from the cities to the countryside in an ill-fated drive to reap 10 million tons of cane.

Each year, the government welcomed foreign sympathizers to visit Cuba and cut cane in solidarity with the socialist revolution.

A restructuring that began in 2002 saw thousands of people lose their jobs, though they were offered employment in other agricultural sectors or job retraining programs.

Now with sugar topping 20 cents a pound worldwide, Cuba is newly motivated to revive the industry and stimulate production.

Authorities have begun overhauling the Brasil and other mills, paying farmers more for cane and handing over fallow land to private growers and agro-cooperatives. As with other sectors of the economy, efficiency is the buzzword, and officials hope Azcuba will be more nimble than the ponderous Sugar Ministry.

Wilson Morell, vice president of Azcuba, set a goal of returning to 4 million tons per year by modernizing the 56 refineries still online, though he did not set a date. That would achieve half of Cuba's historical peak output with about a third of the facilities.

Cuba acknowledges it still must address issues such as installing modern irrigation systems, improving the supply chain and guaranteeing quality of cane sent to the mills. Foreign investment in the sector is nonexistent, though Morell and Perez said negotiations are under way on possible British investment in a bioelectrical plant at one refinery.

Lopez-Levy, whose father was an engineer in the industry, applauded measures such as Azcuba's financial independence. But he cautioned that it's too early to brag about a major comeback, saying it remains to be seen whether the sector can overcome the stubborn bureaucratic mindset that has long plagued Cuba.

"After so many disasters, a measure of skepticism is realistic," the economist said.

Need to revamp FTA funds: study - The Nation

FTA

PETCHANET PRATRUANGKRAI
THE NATION September 27, 2012 1:00 am

The International Institute for Trade and Development (ITD) yesterday raised the idea of restructuring the two funds, one under the Agriculture Ministry and the other under the Commerce Ministry's responsibility.

The Commerce Ministry has been allocated a budget of Bt70 million to develop a marketing strategy for products while the Agriculture Ministry has been handed Bt100 million to develop farm production. They have worked alone instead of together to ensure mutual development.

The funds are aimed at upgrading the agricultural and industrial sectors. However, they should be restructured and need more budget allocations for long-term development, the ITD says. The institute's research found that affected farming and industries that have applied for FTA Fund support have had to wait at least four months and as much as three years to receive assistance. The budget for each project approval is also quite low as each fund has only about Bt100 million to support many industries each year.

Watcharas Leelawath, deputy executive director of the ITD, said the budget that the government has allocated for the FTA Funds was quite small compared with other funds it supports.

"Inevitably, Thailand and other countries are moving ahead with market liberalisation. The free trade will not create only benefits but also challenges and threats for some industries. Thus the government should focus its plan and budget to help develop impacted farmers and enterprises to ensure their competitiveness," he said.

The government has allocated about Bt100 million to the Agriculture fund and Bt70 million to the Commerce fund.

The study urged the government to integrate the operations of the two FTA Funds to develop the whole supply chain of each industry rather than separately develop farming, production and marketing.

Watcharas said the government should consider converting the FTA Funds into a public organisation so that they will have more flexibility and ability to earn their own income.

Wimon Punkong, chief of research at the ITD, said many sectors still needed the government's continued support to ensure their competitiveness under seamless trade.

Many industries such as garment making and farming are losing their edge because of cheaper products from other countries, especially China. The government needs to increase the efficiency of its FTA Funds to ensure smooth operations.

The seamless market will not only affect enterprises, but could also cause lay-offs. The government should provide measures to alleviate the impact on enterprises and workers that could be affected by the FTA.

Among the many FTAs that Thailand has with partner countries, the two with Australia and New Zealand are highly challenging for Thai dairy and beef cattle producers, the ITD said. The FTA with China has affected farming, garments and electrical appliances.

Somboon Hotrakool, president of the Electrical and Electronics Institute, said the FTA Funds should emphasise the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, as they are hit the hardest by the free flow of cheap products from other countries, especially China.

The funds must be allocated to develop product standards in terms of function and design, as well as to help set standards for monitoring the quality of imported merchandise under the FTAs.

During the past several years, the industry has been allocated a budget of Bt5 million from the FTA Funds to develop the product standards of 30 SMEs.

Prattana Prucsasri, president of the Kamphaeng Saen Beef Cattle Association, said Thai beef cattle were at high risk of being wiped out by the Thailand-Australia FTA as duties are scheduled to be gradually reduced to zero by 2020, starting from 51 per cent before this FTA.

The FTA Fund has already helped set up a central market for beef trading, but has not supported the operating costs of about Bt5 million.

Prescription drug abuse drops among U.S. young adults - WAFB 9 ...

MONDAY, Sept. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Prescription drug abuse among young adults ages 18 to 25 in the United States fell 14 percent between 2010 and 2011, according to a federal report released Monday.

During that time, the number of young adults who reported using prescription drugs for non-medical purposes in the last month decreased from 2 million to 1.7 million. However, prescription drug abuse among children ages 12 to 17 and among adults 26 and older remained unchanged.

The 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health also found that rates of drinking, binge drinking and heavy drinking in the past month among underage people continued to decline from 2002, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration said.

Among young people ages 12 to 20, past month alcohol use fell from nearly 29 percent in 2002 to about 25 percent in 2011. Binge drinking -- consuming five or more drinks on a single occasion on at least one day in the past month -- declined from more than 19 percent to about 16 percent, and heavy drinking decreased from about 6 percent to 4.4 percent.

The use of illicit drugs remained stable. Illicit drug use within the past month was reported by 8.7 percent of Americans aged 12 and older in 2010, compared to 8.9 percent last year, according to the report released during National Recovery Month.

Marijuana remained the most commonly used illegal drug. It was used by 7 percent of Americans in 2011, compared with nearly 6 percent in 2007. The rate of marijuana use among 12- to 17-year-olds was about the same in 2011 (7.9 percent) as in 2009 (7.4 percent).

Among the other findings:

- The number of people who reported heroin use in the past year rose from 373,000 in 2007 to 620,000 in 2011.

- Between 2006 and 2011, there were reductions in reported past month use of cocaine (44 percent) and of methamphetamine (40 percent). There was a 19 percent decrease in past-month use of hallucinogens between 2010 and 2011.

- Past month use of tobacco by 12- to 17-year-olds continued to decline from more than 15 percent in 2002, to 10.7 percent in 2010 and 10 percent in 2011.

"These findings show that national efforts to address the problem of prescription drug misuse may be beginning to bear fruit and we must continue to apply this pressure to drive down this and other forms of substance use," SAMHSA Administrator Pamela Hyde said in an agency news release.

"Behind each of these statistics are individuals, families and communities suffering from the consequences of abuse and addiction. We must continue to promote robust prevention, treatment and recovery programs throughout our country," she added.

Gil Kerlikowske, director of National Drug Control Policy, said in the news release: "Drug use in this country creates too many obstacles to opportunity -- especially for young people. The good news is that we are not powerless against this problem. By emphasizing prevention and treatment, as well as smart law enforcement efforts that break the cycle of drug use, crime and incarceration, we know we can reduce drug use and its consequences in America."

Barnes & Noble takes aim at Amazon, Apple with HD Nook tablets

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Barnes & Noble Inc took a shot at archrival Amazon.com on Wednesday, unveiling its own lighter and thinner hi-definition tablets that can accommodate multiple users in a bid to win a bigger share of the exploding tablet market.

The largest U.S. bookstore chain introduced the new devices with price tags ranging from $199 for a 7-inch Nook HD tablet with 8 gigabytes of memory, to $299 for a 9-inch Nook HD+ tablet, similar in size to Apple Inc's market-leading iPad, with 32 GB of memory. IPad prices are roughly twice as high for similar devices.

The new Nooks are the latest entrants in the fight for sales of tablets and e-readers - and the digital content like books, movies and magazines that goes with them. Barnes & Noble has staked its future on its digital business as the company faces an overall industrywide drop in the sales of physical books.

"A key growth area is to get their existing customer base onto the digital platform," Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps told Reuters, saying the new devices were competitive with similar products by Amazon in terms of features and pricing.

Barnes & Noble faces formidable competition from Amazon, which can use its Prime shipping service and amazon.com site to draw users, and the iPad, which has sold in the tens of millions of units.

To keep pace, Barnes & Noble added innovative features that would allow each a family to share a Nook tablet, with each user able to create a home page and customize preferences, the first table to do so. There are also parental controls that can prevent kids from reading "Fifty Shades of Grey" or go shopping on the digital store.

The company is also launching a new video-streaming and download service for Nook, narrowing the gap with Amazon and Apple, which offer more content on their devices.

At a media event in Manhattan on Tuesday, officials said the company had emphasized features such as image resolution and page-turning technology given the needs of its basic customers, book and magazine readers.

"We are playing in the tablet space, but reading is at our core," Barnes & Noble Chief Executive William Lynch told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

The 7-inch tablet weighs 11.1 ounces. Its larger sibling is 18.2 ounces, making it lighter than the iPad and making them both more appropriate for reading, he added. The iPad weighs about 23 ounces.

The top U.S. bookstore chain launched its first Nook device, a basic e-reader, in 2009 and has held its own with deep-pocketed rivals Amazon, Apple and Google Inc. That success has allowed it to garner as much as 30 percent of the U.S. electronic-books market.

Barnes & Noble's new devices, available for pre-order on Wednesday, will ship in October and be in U.S. stores in November. They will be on sale in Britain beginning in late November at chains including Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

For a factbox comparing Nook, iPad and Kindle:

BRUISING PRICE WARS

The tablet market is among the fastest-growing sectors of the technology industry. Research firm Gartner forecasts that sales will almost double this year, to 118.9 million units.

Barnes & Noble's latest Nooks will appear in its nearly 700 stores as well as chains Best Buy Co Inc, Target Corp and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Target and Wal-Mart have decided to no longer carry Amazon's Kindles, giving the Nook an edge at thousands of retail locations.

Amazon.com Inc earlier this month unveiled its own HD tablets. It launched its first last year and says it has a 22 percent share of the U.S. market.

With the new Nooks, Barnes & Noble is also taking aim at Apple, whose iPad is far more expensive, because there is room in the market for a strong tablet at a lower price, Lynch said.

Questions about the Nook's long-term viability arose last month after Barnes & Noble reported that Nook revenue including ebooks last quarter was up only 0.3 percent, hurt by price decreases early in the summer. That has added urgency to developing new products.

Price wars with Amazon have been bruising, but Lynch was undismayed: "We're growing the digital content portion of the business, and that's where we envision making our economics," Lynch said.

Last quarter, Barnes & Noble lost business when it didn't have enough Nook devices that allow for reading in the dark. Lynch said the company is now producing HD tablets in numbers sufficient to meet what it expects will be strong demand during the holiday period.

"We believe we'll gain significant share in the tablet category, and we've planned for that from a production standpoint. I believe these are going to be hot holiday gifts."

His older brother is actor Beau Bridges, he also has a younger sister, Lucinda, who is an artist and another brother Garrett, who died of sudden infant death syndrome in 1948. Bridges shared a close relationship with his brother Beau growing up, as Beau acted as a surrogate father to him when their father was working. At age seventeen, Bridges toured with his father in a stage production of Anniversary Waltz. After graduating from high school, he went to New York City to study acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio. He also joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve, where he served for eight years.?Bridges also has a passion for music and in 2011 had signed a recording contract with Blue Note Records/EMI Music Group and released his second album, Jeff Bridges?(2011).

Lloyd Bridges

Lloyd Bridges, Jr. was an America actor, best known for his role of Mike Nelson in Sea Hunt, the most popular syndicated American TV series in 1958. He was born in San Leandro, California to Harriet Evelyn (Brown) and Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Sr., who was involved in the California hotel business and once owned a movie theater. His parents were both natives of Kansas, and had English ancestry. Bridges studied political science at UCLA, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He joined the stock company at Columbia Pictures, where he played small roles in features and short subjects. He left Columbia to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard and following World War II, he returned to film acting. He resumed working after being cleared by the FBI, finding his greatest success in television. Bridges met his wife, Dorothy Bridges in his fraternity at UCLA; they married in 1938 in New York City.

Dorothy Louise Bridges was an American actress and poet born in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was of English ancestry. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was two years old. St. Maarten police arrest suspect in killing of American couple

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - Police in St. Maarten have arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of an American couple in the Dutch Caribbean territory of St. Maarten, officials said on Monday.

Michael and Thelma King, a couple in their 50s who lived near Charleston, South Carolina, were found dead on Friday in their condominium at the Ocean Club Resort in St. Maarten, the Dutch half of the Caribbean island shared with France.

Thelma King, 57, was tied to a chair and her husband, 53, was lying on the floor and partially over another chair, local officials said in a statement. The motive of the crime was unclear, the statement said.

St. Maarten Prosecutor General, Taco Stein, said the suspect's identity was being withheld pending further investigation. "We hope to arraign him before a judge on Tuesday if we have sufficient evidence," he said.

Terry Tamblyn, a longtime friend of the Kings who lives on Isle of Palms, South Carolina, near Charleston, said he had talked to King family members who are now in St. Maarten.

Police called the family on Sunday at 5 a.m. to say they had arrested a suspect in the killings, Tamblyn said. He said the suspect worked for a security company at a gated condominium near the Kings.

"They had just put in security cameras, not in the condo, but on the grounds. And they'd just added an iron gate that you had to have a card to get in after 11 p.m.," Tamblyn said.

The Kings owned restaurants in St. Maarten and Polliwogs, a sports bar in Columbia, South Carolina, Tamblyn said. Michael King was also in the process of starting a rum distributorship in St. Maarten, Tamblyn said.

The killings stunned residents of the tiny eastern Caribbean territory of about 50,000 residents.

"St. Maarten is and will always be a nation that is close-knit and where people from all over the world come to visit and live. Therefore I am in deep distress upon learning about the horrible acts which have tainted our country," Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams said in a statement.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the couple found murdered."

Wahoo Fitness introduces RFLKT: an iPhone-powered bike computer that lets handsets stay in pockets

Sure, you can turn your smartphone into a bike computer, but if you'd rather not put your pricey piece of tech anywhere near harm's way, Wahoo Fitness' RFLKT Bike Computer offers an alternative. Instead of packing all the brains, the device sits atop a bicycle's handlebar and displays data it's fed via Bluetooth 4.0 from cycling apps running on an iPhone 4S or 5. At launch, the hardware will support the firm's own Cyclemeter application and Wahoo Fitness App which can monitor ride information ranging from location to speed, in addition to heart rate with additional accoutrement. Aspiring Alberto Contadors can page through data and even sift through tunes on their playlist with the help of buttons on the device's side. Gently tipping the scales at 2 ounces, the RFLKT measures up at 2.4- x 1.6 x 0.5-inches and boats a one-year battery life on a single coin cell. Wahoo's gadget is slated for a December launch, but there's still no word on pricing. For more specifics, take a gander at the full press release below.
